Recently the Centre for Cellular Imaging (CCI) at Core Facilities organized the Correlative Array Tomography (CAT) Workshop 2023. The Workshop was designed to bring experts, researchers, and industry together interested in Cellular 3D volume – Correlative Array Tomography to introduce this new technology, stimulate knowledge exchange, and form collaborations.
“It was a fantastic and exciting workshop with visitors from all over the world interested in 3D volume electron microscopy and correlative approaches. No matter where they were in their career, participating in this Workshop allowed them to stay abreast of this new imaging technology, learn new sample preparation and image processing & analysis methods, and most importantly, network with colleagues and make new connections”, says Julia Fernandez -Rodriguez, Head of CCI.
Majority votes for Eric Hanse as new head of the Institute of neuroscience and physiology
The advisory election for the new head of the Institute of neuroscience and physiology is now concluded. A significant majority of the voters (91.9 percent) approved the Nomination Committee’s proposal to appoint Eric Hanse as the next head. The voter turnout was 53.54 percent. Out of the 136 valid votes, there were 9 abstentions (6.6 percent). Silke Kern and Lars-Gunnar Pettersson each received one vote in the election. Three large grants from VR in clinical treatment research to Gothenburg
When the Swedish Research Council presented the grant decisions in clinical treatment research, it was clear that three large research environments in Gothenburg will receive funding. Helena Filipsson Nyström receives just over SEK 12 million for her research environment, which studies the impact of mild nutritional deficiencies in the mother on the fetal brain (the SWIDDICH study). Anna Gordh receives just over SEK 7 million for her research environment GOT-TO-GO, which conducts a clinical treatment study for patients with computer game addiction. Anders Rosengren receives almost SEK 19 million for the research environment surrounding the Lifestyle Tool, with the goal of preventing type 2 diabetes. In addition, two researchers receive project grants: Valdemar Landgren receives almost SEK 1.2 million for a project on testosterone-suppressing drug therapy to prevent sexual abuse, and Helen Sjöland receives just over 1.1 million to its project “Specialized home healthcare for advanced heart failure with digital distance technology”.

Research grant to Toshima Parris from the Knut & Ragnvi Jacobsson Family Foundation
Toshima Parris, Associate Professor of oncology at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, receives SEK 500’000 in research scholarship from the Knut & Ragnvi Jacobsson Family Foundation for a project on triple-negative breast cancer, which is an aggressive and difficult-to-treat form of the disease. The group has recently shown that triple-negative breast cancer contains a large proportion of cancer stem cells, and will now try to develop treatments that kill these cells. Blood and tissue samples (tumor and normal samples) are collected from patients with this type of breast cancer, and then examined using molecular techniques. The researchers want to understand why cancer stem cells are resistant to certain treatments and which drugs can work.
Research grant awarded to Johan Zelano from the Knut & Ragnvi Jacobsson Foundation
Johan Zelano, a professor in neurology at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, has been awarded a half-million SEK research grant from the Knut & Ragnvi Jacobsson Foundation. The funding supports research on register-based monitoring of epilepsy medications, aiming to identify which drugs pose risks of specific side effects for different patients, using registry data. The goal is to enhance safety monitoring through registry information, not only ensuring safer treatments but also making Sweden a more attractive launch market for new epilepsy medications.
The Young Academy of Sweden is seeking new members – the deadline for applications is January 10th
As a member, you will have access to a forum where a selection of Sweden’s leading young researchers gather to discuss and advocate for issues broadly related to research and science. The activities are supported by private and public research funders and operated with the assistance of a secretariat. You will, for instance, have the opportunity to engage in research policy advocacy, enhance your skills in science communication for the general public, inspire children and youth to take an interest in science, and grow in your role as an academic leader.

Ingrid Wernstedt Asterholm is now professor of physiology
Akademiliv congratulates Ingrid Wernstedt Asterholm, who is now a professor of physiology at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. Ingrid Wernstedt Asterholm has a broad interest in physiology, particularly metabolic and endocrine regulation, as well as how the body adapts its function to various types of stressors. The group is currently focusing on the function of adipose tissue, conducting both basic and translational research. The overall goal is to identify new mechanisms for metabolic regulation in health and disease.
