Ulf Yrlid is now professor of mucosal immune- and microbiology
Akademiliv congratulates Ulf Yrlid on the professorship in mucosal immune- and microbiology! His research group studies how the outermost layer of cells in the intestine, the epithelial cells, cooperate with immune cells to protect us against bacterial toxins and how the immune cells can counteract intestinal tumors. The research evaluates the interactions of the toxins with new toxin receptors found by the group in order to develop countermeasures against binding of the toxins. Furthermore, the intestinal immune cells are also studied using multi-colour microscopy of biopsies taken from rectal cancer patients before surgery, in order to be able to tailor their treatment. Ulf Yrlid lectures and also actively develops immunology teaching in the medical program and for bachelor’s and master’s students at the Faculty of Science.

New biobank act from July 1st
On July 1, 2023, Sweden will have a new biobank act. According to the new law, samples taken in healthcare may be stored in a biobank if the patient/sample provider has consented to the healthcare and received information according to the requirements of the law. One change is that even samples for research that are taken outside of a healthcare provider’s operations are covered by the new law. All samples must be established in a biobank.
- For more information visit biobanksverige.se. There you can also watch recorded webinars in Swedish about the new biobank act (in Swedish).
- Contact for questions: Linn Gustavsson, biobank coordinator and the Västra Götaland region’s contact person for the introduction of the new biobank law. Email: linn.m.gustavsson@vgregion.se
