Ulf Yrlid is now professor of mucosal immune- and microbiology

Akademiliv congratulates Ulf Yrlid on the professorship in mucosal immune- and microbiology! His research group studies how the outermost layer of cells in the intestine, the epithelial cells, cooperate with immune cells to protect us against bacterial toxins and how the immune cells can counteract intestinal tumors. The research evaluates the interactions of the toxins with new toxin receptors found by the group in order to develop countermeasures against binding of the toxins. Furthermore, the intestinal immune cells are also studied using multi-colour microscopy of biopsies taken from rectal cancer patients before surgery, in order to be able to tailor their treatment. Ulf Yrlid lectures and also actively develops immunology teaching in the medical program and for bachelor’s and master’s students at the Faculty of Science.
