Akademiliv congratulates Johan Zelano, who is now professor of neurology at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. He researches epilepsy and epilepsy healthcare. His research group, in collaboration with other researchers, looks for biomarkers of importance in the treatment of epilepsy and uses registry data to study prognosis in epilepsy. The research has a particular focus on epilepsy acquired after various brain injuries. Johan Zelano is a senior physician in neurology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital and responsible for the epilepsy team at Neurosjukvården. He teaches in several undergraduate programs and has written textbooks or textbook chapters on epilepsy, neurology, and academic writing
Anna Grimby Ekman is now professor of health science statistics
Akademiliv congratulates Anna Grimby Ekman on the professorship! Her research group focuses on long-term pain in different patient and population groups. They study treatment, and also the variation in treatment results in different individuals, and also evaluate existing instruments in pain research. The research is largely based on registries and cohort studies, but is also clinical and experimental. Several current projects increase knowledge of the connections between pain conditions and anxiety, depression and stress through evaluation of biomarkers and studies on how different physiological systems interact in the body. Anna Grimby Ekman is the subject representative for health science statistics and teaches in the postgraduate program. She is deputy director of studies for the postgraduate program at the Institute of Medicine.

Jan Holgersson and Annette Lennerling received grants for research into kidney transplants
The Gelin Foundation contributes to research into kidney replacement therapy, primarily kidney transplants. In total, the fund now distributes SEK 400,000 to three projects, two of which are in Gothenburg. Jan Holgersson receives SEK 200,000 to develop a test that can provide a more reliable risk assessment in the group of patients who lack HLA antibodies in their blood. Annette Lennerling receives SEK 100,000 for an interview study about being a young adult and organ transplant recipient. Alexandra Nowak at Karolinska Institutet also receives funds from the fund.

Annelie Tobin to be new Head of Faculty Office
It is now clear that Annelie Tobin will take over as Sahlgrenska Academy’s new Head of Faculty Office after the summer. The faculty office is an administrative unit under the dean with a focus on advice, handling and service within the academy. Annelie Tobin started as international coordinator at Sahlgrenska Academy in 2002, and since 2015 has experience in administrative leadership within the office. Since 2018, she has been head of education and internationalization. During the period 2012-2015, she was an administrative member of the Faculty Board. She succeeds Margareta Rorsman, who retires on September 15. Akademiliv returns with an interview.
Local crisis management plan decided by Dean Agneta Holmäng
A local crisis management plan is now available for Sahlgrenska Academy, decided by Dean Agneta Holmäng. The plan has been drawn up after discussion in the Council for Heads of Institutes. The plan for Sahlgrenska Academy will be revised in the autumn due to the fact that the Vice-Chancellor now has decided on new university-wide rules for crisis preparedness. The plan contains practical information that will continue to be valid. The plan will also be made available in English. You can find the crisis management plan (currently only in Swedish) on the Staff Portal.
Apply for fund for researchers research activity
Sahlgrenska Academy International Starting Grant is an annual internal call aimed at encouraging the institutes at the Sahlgrenska Academy to recruit talented researchers with international experience. In total, SEK 4 million is announced to a maximum of 4 researchers. Grants awarded shall be added to the budget for the institutes and be used for the researcher’s research activities (please note- not for researchers salary). Deadline August 31, 2023.

Hanna Persson and Christina Ljungberg Persson won Akademiliv’s book lottery
Many people got in touch and were interested in winning the book “Att kommunicera vetenskap – Forskaren och omvärlden” (‘To communicate science – The researcher and the surrounding world’) by Marie Demker and Bengt Johansson. The winners are Hanna Persson, adjunct university lecturer in the research group for rehabilitation medicine, and Christina Ljungberg Persson, university lecturer at the Department of Community Medicine and Public Health. Congratulations! The book arrives in the mail.
Schedule your meeting at GoCo – access to Officehub and Lounge continued free of charge
Since Sahlgrenska Academy is a Founding Partner in GoCo, it is possible for our employees to use these newly built premises for meetings. GoCo’s OfficeHub and Lobby with the possibility to work in a creative Lounge environment can be used spontaneously with drop-in, free of charge. There is room for a total of around 150 guests in the open or terraced area. GoCo also offers closed rooms for up to 70 guests in cinema seating, available with a discount for Founding Partners.
