Two researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy, both from the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, received VR grants in calls other than those directed towards medical or natural sciences. Malin Antonsson, a postdoctoral researcher in the Section for Health and Rehabilitation, received SEK 6,615,000 within the humanities and social sciences for her project “Consequences of acquired brain injury or post-COVID on language and communication – the interplay between subjective and objective difficulties over time.” Simon Skau, a postdoctoral researcher in the Section for Clinical Neuroscience, received establishment grant within the call for educational sciences, amounting to SEK 3,991,000. The project title is “The neurocognitive mechanisms of mathematical cognition in school: impact of cognitive load, proactive control, and geometric information in 9-year-olds.”
Florencia Harari receives 1.5 million for research on sustainable and safe battery recycling
Florencia Harari, a physician and associate professor, receives 1.5 million from the Swedish Energy Agency for a project developing small-scale, energy-efficient battery recycling using sustainable chemicals. Collaborating with Chalmers University and private companies, the 7.6 million project aims to improve environmental impact and working conditions in battery recycling, contributing to climate goals and a circular economy.

Anneli Ozanne receives four million from the Neuro Association for ALS research
Anneli Ozanne, nursing associate professor at the Institute of Health and Care Sciences, receives four million SEK from the Neuro Association for her ALS research. As a dual-role university hospital chief nurse at Neuro Care, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, she aims to develop a support intervention for families with a parent diagnosed with ALS. Focusing on families with home-residing children up to 25 years old, Ozanne addresses the often overwhelming burden on these families, highlighting the project’s goal to showcase the necessary redesign of support, acknowledging its current inadequacies and national disparities.
17 projects receive ALF funding for 2024 projects and for HTA
It has now been decided which individuals have been granted ALF project funding for 2024 and ALF funding for supplementary studies related to HTA for 2024–2025. 15 projects were awarded a total of 6.4 million SEK in ALF project funding, and 2 projects shared a total of 1.25 million SEK in ALF funding for HTA. Representatives from biomedical analyzer training programs gathered in Gothenburg
Representatives from all ten Swedish institutions offering biomedical analyzer training programs convened in Gothenburg on October 10-11. Hosted by the biomedical analyzer program at Sahlgrenska Academy, the meeting centered on “The future professional role of biomedical analyzers – how programs address this?” Discussions spanned topics such as a new curriculum, teacher recruitment, healthcare career paths, and future competencies. A session on broadened recruitment and inclusion was also held. Representatives from the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) described the planned 2024 evaluation of the programs. Next year’s networking meeting is scheduled for Linköping.

Assignment as a teacher in Basic Course in Supervision and Learning for Resident Physicians (ST-trainees)
As part of the efforts to expand the practical training in the new medical program, the Medical Program Committee announces a call for teachers in the basic course in supervision and learning for resident physicians (ST-trainees). The assignment involves serving as the representative of the Sahlgrenska Academy in the course ‘Basic Course in Supervision and Learning,’ which is a mandatory course for ST-trainee physicians in the Västra Götaland region. The course spans three days and includes a fourth practical day. The assignment covers 10% of full-time employment during the period 2024-2025.

Caroline Miranda Larsen and Aron Onerup receive Sahlgrenska Academy International Starting Grants
This year’s recipients of the Sahlgrenska Academy International Starting Grant are Caroline Miranda Larsen (Neuroscience and Physiology) and Aron Onerup (Clinical Sciences), a grant that awards them SEK one million each from the faculty. Caroline Miranda Larsen has completed a postdoc at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism. Her project at Sahlgrenska Academy explores a new role for delta cells in the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas, as well as the hormone somatostatin in diabetes. Aron Onerup has completed a postdoc at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, USA. He will investigate the potential of lifestyle interventions to mitigate late cardiovascular effects in individuals who have survived childhood cancer.
