Welcome Services is looking for employees who want to discuss gender equality in focus groups

Are you interested in gender equality issues? Do you want to participate and discuss how GU can develop the work with gender equality for researchers? Welcome Services now invites to a focus group to discuss these and related gender issues, as part of an ongoing European collaboration project focusing on researchers’ career development (EURAXESS Hubs, WP Gender). The discussions will be held in Swedish, but will be adjusted to English if needed. Two focus group discussions are conducted in parallel:

  1. Discussion with researchers, focusing on their own experiences of gender equality at the university.
  2. Discussion with department staff, both in leading positions and administrative roles, HR staff and other stakeholders, with a focus on their perspective on gender equality work at the university.

It is now time for us to complete step 2 above, and we therefore invite you to participate in focus group 2.

When: Week 14, April 2022

Location: Welcome Services, Studenternas hus – Götabergsgatan 17

The discussion will last for about 90 minutes.

Opportunity for researchers with a PhD from Ukraine to apply for funding in Sweden

Ukrainian researchers who come to Sweden in 2022 can now apply for grants to conduct their research here. 30 million SEK is allocated in the call “SSF individual grants for Ukrainian scientists 2022” which is aimed at Ukrainian citizens with a doctoral degree. The researcher must be employed by a Swedish university or a research institute during the project period. All forms of employment are permitted, ranging from temporary employment as postdoc or visiting professor to more permanent faculty positions. The researcher can apply for a maximum of 3 MSEK and the duration of the project can be up to 3 years. A letter of intent must be submitted by the Swedish host institution.
The researcher must conduct strategic research within SSF’s areas: Natural Science, Engineering and Medicine.

Six researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy receive funding from the Kidney Foundation

The Kidney Fund distributes a total of SEK 6.1 million in this year’s call, where six researchers in Gothenburg share SEK 750,000. Kerstin Ebefors receives SEK 150,000 to study the role of IgA receptors in the inflammatory response to IgA nephritis. Jana Ekberg receives SEK 150,000 to carry out a five-year follow-up of kidney transplant patients without steroids. Åsa Norén receives SEK 100,000 to study renal impairment in liver transplantation. Jenny Nyström receives SEK 150,000 for her research on diabetic kidney disease mechanisms. John Söfteland receives SEK 100,000 for regsiter linking studies on covid-19 in kidney transplant recipients. YiYi Xu receives SEK 100,000 to study whether exposure to both metals and air pollutants means more kidney toxicity.

The Nomination Committee’s proposal for Vice-Chancellor to decide: Henrik Hagberg to remain as Pro-Dean

The advisory choice of Pro-Dean has now been completed. The number of valid votes cast was 507, which means a response rate of 40.27 percent. 431 of the voters chose to vote yes to Henrik Hagberg, which corresponds to 85 percent of the valid votes. In the election, 67 blank votes and 9 votes for other proposed persons were received. The Nomination Committee submits the results of the vote to the Vice-Chancellor and proposes that Professor Henrik Hagberg be appointed Pro-Dean at Sahlgrenska Academy until the end of 2023.

Planned national test of outdoor warning system on Monday

4 March, 2022

On Monday March 7 at 3 pm the Swedish outdoor warning system will be tested according to plan.

Four times annually the Swedish outdoor warning system is tested. The signal sounds for 7 seconds, with 14 second breaks, for a total of 6 times. Afterwards, the “danger over” signal is tested, which is an uninterrupted 30-second signal.

On Monday March 7 at 3 pm the system will be tested according to plan. Given the current situation The Swedish Contingencies Agency stresses this this is a planned test.

Do not miss your discount on publishing fees

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg can avoid paying or receive a discount on the publication fee through the university library’s agreements with a number of publishers. On the website of the Gothenburg University Library, there is a search service where you can see in which journals you can publish open access free of charge or with a discount on the publication fee (APC). To be able to take advantage of the discount, the corresponding author needs to be affiliated with the University of Gothenburg. Publishers have additional instructions on how to take advantage of the discount.

Welcome to apply for the ‘Bollan’ Stipend 2022

Open for application March 15th, until april 30th, 2022

Young researchers active in medical research at Sahlgrenska Academy are now welcome to apply for the Elisabeth ‘Bollan’ Lindén Stipend 2022. The target group is doctoral (PhD) students or researchers who have obtained their PhD degree no more than 5 years ago (parental leave excluded).

  • A total sum of 250.000 SEK per year will be distributed to a maximum of 5 scholars. A researcher can be granted the stipend maximum two times.
  • The stipend should be used for work performed at the platforms within Core Facilities. This means that you have the chance to acquire knowledge and utilize the techniques and services that are available here.

Ann Nordgren is a new professor of clinical genetics

Akademiliv congratulates Ann Nordgren on her professorship in clinical genetics! She has been recruited as a reinforcement of research in rare diagnoses and childhood cancer at Sahlgrenska Academy, and clinically also by the Center for Rare Diagnoses (CSD) within in the activities at Clinical Genetics and Genomics, and Sahlgrenska Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) which is established by Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Ann Nordgren comes most recently from Karolinska Institutet / University Hospital. Among other things, she is responsible for the national ChiCAP study concerning genetic predisposition for childhood cancer, which is a sub-project within Genomic Medicine Sweden and their childhood tumor project funded by the Childhood Cancer Foundation.

National life science conference January 2022: the recording is available

If you missed this year’s life science conference, you can take part in the recording instead (in Swedish). The annual event is a cross-sectoral meeting place for Sweden’s life science actors from business, academia and the public sector. This year’s conference was held digitally and the hosts for the event were the Västra Götaland region and the cluster organization Health Innovation West.
Since 2019, Sweden has had a national life science strategy. Jenni Nordborg is the national life science coordinator, and the responsible ministers are Karl-Petter Thorwaldsson, Minister of Trade and Industry, Lena Hallengren, Minister of Social Affairs and Anna Ekström, Minister of Education.

Do you want to contribute with a local sub-study to SCAPIS 2?

SCAPIS 2 is currently being planned, with the aim of re-examining half of the study participants who participated in full-scale SCAPIS, a total of 15,000, at all sites (Gothenburg / SU, Malmö / Lund, Linköping, Stockholm, Uppsala and Umeå). These participants have previously undergone extensive research in order to be able to identify individual risks and prevent the onset of cardiovascular and lung diseases. At Sahlgrenska University Hospital, a re-examination of 3125 people is planned. Preliminarily, the study will start in the fourth quarter, 2023 and the study is estimated to take two years to complete in Gothenburg. There is now the opportunity to apply to join a local sub-study to SCAPIS 2 at Sahlgrenska. Read further (in Swedish)
