When the School of Public Health and Community Medicine is co-located in 2024 in the building that is today known as the Earth Science Centre (Geovetarcentrum, GVC), the building will be renamed. Its new name will be The Health Science Center (in Swedish Hälsovetenskapligt Centrum – HVC). The department is now also investing in increasing collaboration, through the establishment of a special group that has begun its work on improving collaboration with various actors in society. On October 18, the School of Public Health and Community Medicine is also organizing a research and education day for the entire department, together with Regional Health’s FoUUI organization. Maria Åberg is a new professor in general medicine
We congratulate Maria Åberg, now professor in general medicine! The research group conducts clinical trials and epidemiological projects based on her previous preclinical research issues. Recently, she has investigated a number of risk factors during her teens for the development of cardiovascular disease, mental illness and cancer later in life. She emphasizes that the trends among young people with impaired physical activity, increasing screen time, mental illness and obesity mean that a holistic approach is needed to reverse the development. Maria also studies connections between the working environment and mental illness as well as infectious diseases. She is head of department for community medicine and public health and examines medical students. She is also specialist physicians at Närhälsan Sisjön’s health center and chairman of the primary care regional quality register Qregp.
Now you can propose new members of The Swedish Heart Lung Foundation’s research council
The Swedish Heart Lung Foundation is looking for a lung expert and three cardiovascular experts for the research council. The Foundation is looking for established researchers with high scientific competence from all university locations. In the pulmonary field, they are interested in researchers with broad competence and clinical translational experience. In the cardiovascular area, we particularly ask for proposals for researchers with broad competence in clinical and translational research as well as in genetics. The fund tries to ensure an even representation between the country’s universities and a good composition of different specialties. The Foundation particularly welcomes nominations from women, and those who are proposed must be interviewed. Proposals for members are made in this template for “competency description” and emailed to research.support@sahlgrenska.gu.se, no later than Thursday, October 5.
Read about the Biomedical Library’s fluoride collection in Tandläkartidningen
Since fluoride was shown to be the answer to the caries epidemic, the idea of adding a small amount of fluoride to the drinking water was raised to put an end to Swedish tooth decay once and for all. However, the idea was met with strong opposition, where both democracy and the rights of the individual were considered threatened. One of the debaters was Nobel laureate Arvid Carlsson, who warned of bone damage. At the Biomedical Library there is the so-called Fluoride Collection, which sheds light on the debate that took place during the period 1950-1971. The Fluoride Collection is the starting point for an article worth reading (in Swedish) in the Journal Tandläkartidningen by librarian Fredrik Good.

Don’t miss taking advantage of your healthcare allowance – deadline is November 1st
Staff at the University of Gothenburg are entitled to compensation for health-promoting activities of a maximum of SEK 2,000 per calendar year. As of January 1, 2022, the university is changing its handling due to adaptation to the Swedish Tax Agency’s legal guidance on compensation for health care.
The change means that reimbursement for health-promoting activities is approved according to the main rule only for the calendar year in which the cost is paid. Staff therefore need to report the request for compensation as soon as possible after they have incurred the cost, but no later than the December salary run of the current year. The university does not replace receipts older than November 1st of the previous year, since that would be charged the next year.
Development research is funded despite the lack of new funds
The research financiers Formas and the Swedish Research Council announce that they are teaming up and financing development research, despite the fact that the government announced in June that no new money would be spent on this. The preparation of applications within the “Sustainability and resilience” call therefore continues as planned.
