SSMF increases the amount for postdoctoral grants to SEK 1,000,000

SSMF has now announced its postdoctoral grant, with the application deadline 15 November. New for this year is that the amount has been increased from SEK 700,000 to SEK 1,000,000. Read further under Grants in Akademiliv.

Diana Swolin-Eide is now a professor of pediatrics

Akademiliv congratulates Diana Swolin-Eide on her professorship in pediatrics! Her research is translational and deals with many different factors that regulate bone density and growth in children and young people. The research aims to help prevent growth disorders, osteoporosis and fractures. Due to new patient groups, knowledge in the field is now increasingly in demand in healthcare. Diana Swolin-Eide is also strongly involved in education issues and has long worked both locally, regionally and nationally in the field of education. She has a combination employement as a University Hospital Chief Physician and acts as R&D manager at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

Publication plan for the newsletter from Akademiliv in the academic year 2021-2022

The content of Akademiliv’s website is continuously updated. The regular newsletter from Akademiliv is sent every Wednesday morning, but take a break in connection with school holidays. In the autumn term 2021, you will receive the first newsletter on Wednesday August 25th. Due to the autumn holiday week 44, there will be no newsletter on Wednesday November 3rd. From December 16th the newsletter will break for Christmas, to be back on Wednesday January 12th. During 2021, the newsletter will skip February 16th (sports holiday), and April 13th (Easter holiday). The last newsletter before the summer break 2021 will reach you on 23 June 23.
Extra mailing of the newsletter takes place when needed.

Gothenburg is ranked second on the list of Sweden’s best student cities

Gothenburg, which includes the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology, is placed as number two on the list of Sweden’s best student cities by the website Studentum.se. The list is topped by Stockholm, while Västerås is named Sweden’s third best student city. According to the assessment, Gothenburg has a broad labor market that can offer many opportunities for extra work and internships, and also increases the opportunity for students to enter their future professional life. The good opportunity for commuting is also taken into account in the assessment. Worth noting, however, is the fact that it is still difficult to get hold of student housing in Gothenburg.

The Swedish Ethical Review Authority launches new application system – applications will be paused for a week

On October 4th at 09:00, the Swedish Ethical Review Authority will open its new system for application and processing – Ethix. The current application system closes on September 23rd at midnight (23:59), which means that the opportunity to submit an ethics applications is paused for just over a week. The authority’s ambition is to create a user-friendly and efficient system with a completely digital flow from filling in and signing the application to receiving a final decision. The new Ethix system will be accessible via the website www.etikprovning.se. On the Ethics Review Authority’s website, you will also find more information about the system and how the introduction of Ethix takes place.

Kjell Asplund in Curie: Tougher times await cheating researchers

Kjell Asplund, professor emeritus at Umeå University and chairman of the National Board of Health and Welfare, states in a column in the latest issue of the Swedish Research Council’s magazine Curie that it will be tougher for research cheaters in the future. In addition to the stricter legislation within misconduct in research, he also sees a development where AI will help the research community to identify image manipulation, which is the form of cheating that seems to have become dominant. GUbox shuts down in the spring of 2022: clean and move your files in the autumn

GUbox is being discontinued and will be shut down sometime in April-May of next year. Staff is encouraged to clean and move files from GUbox to other suitable storage locations during the autumn. Recommended options for storage and collaboration are the services available within the university’s productivity platform in Microsoft 365. OneDrive is recommended for your own files and documents that you want to be able to access from different devices. SharePoint is recommended for the files and documents that several employees need to share or collaborate on, for example in Teams. Read further in the Staff Portal.

Sahlgrenska Academy Science Seminars is based on participation from all parts of the faculty. You can register to host a speaker or you can suggest a speaker. The suggested speaker could be yourself or a colleague at the University of Gothenburg, another higher education institution, or another national or international organization. Suggest a speaker to the Research Support Division here.

Elina Falsafi Tonekaboni is the new chairman of the student union SAKS

Elina Falsafi Tonekaboni has been appointed new chairman of the Sahlgrenska Academy’s student union, SAKS. Elina is 22 years old, and a recent graduate student in the dental technician program. The new vice chair with responsibility for study social issues is medical student Alexandra Belitsky, 22, and the new vice chair with responsibility for educational issues is the pharmacy student Vendela Karlsson, 27.

Xiaoyang Wang appointed Professor of Perinatal and Reproductive Health

Akademiliv congratulates Xiaoyang Wang on her professorship! Newborn infants are at high risk of getting brain injury when encountering some events during perinatal period such as birth asphyxia, preterm birth, and infection. This may lead to cerebral palsy and other long – term neurological disabilities. Xiaoyang Wang’s research goal is to fundamentally advance our knowledge of the key factors that impact on brain development and injury processes in the perinatal period, and to eventually identify effective therapeutic strategies for perinatal brain injury, that are currently lacking. Her research is mostly preclinical and experimental, and she is also involved in clinical studies. Xiaoyang Wang teaches in physiology in the medical program and pharmacy program.
