Do you want to influence Sweden’s strategy in next EU framework program Horizon Europe?

20 August, 2020

Vinnova, Formas, Forte, the Swedish Energy Agency, the Swedish National Space Agency and the Swedish Research Council have been commissioned by the government to develop a proposal for a strategy for Sweden’s participation in the EU’s forthcoming Horizon Europe framework program.

An important part of the work is to gather views from Swedish research and innovation actors, e.g. through a survey, to get answers to what goals and measures are required for a valuable and strategic Swedish participation. The survey closes September 1st.

A digital hearing will be arranged on 29 September where you can take part in the documentation and give comments before it is submitted to the Government Offices on October 30th. More info about the proposal can be found here.

Martin Ott is a new professor of molecular cell biology

19 August, 2020

Akademiliv congratulates Martin Ott on his professorship in molecular cell biology at Sahlgrenska Academy! His research revolves around mitochondria, which are sometimes called the power plant of the cell because of its role in the extraction of energy during metabolism. Current projects in his group evaluate the molecular mechanisms by which mitochondrial proteins are formed, as well as how they participate in the construction of mitochondrial protein complexes such as the respiratory chain. An ongoing project concerns the organization and regulation of mitochondrial gene expression using methods ranging from cell-based assays to high-resolution electron microscopy. In Gothenburg, he is especially looking forward to further developing the research program for human cell systems and metabolic reprogramming, which usually takes place during development, dietary changes, or diseases.

The casting of the foundation of Natrium has begun

17 August, 2020

So far, the work with Natrium on Medicinareberget has involved blasting away rocks and preparing the ground for the construction work. The construction of the buildning itself has now commenced, since the casting has begun. One of the first castings that was made was the outer wall of the new culvert, which will, among other things, connect Natrium to the cooling plant. Twelve cubic meters of concrete were cast on site using a crane and a basin. In total, there will be approximately 2,500 cubic meters of concrete when the foundation is completed. Read more and see a film from the first casting in June 2020 on the Staff Portal: https://medarbetarportalen.gu.se/aktuellt/nyheter-detalj//nu-har-gjutningen-av-grunden-pa-natrium-inletts.cid1691810

The Vice-Chancellor on face masks: In the first place, crowding is to be avoided

17 August, 2020

It is currently not relevant to introduce a general recommendation on the use of face masks, states Vice-Chancellor Eva Wiberg, as a response to the announcement that KI recommends face masks in case of crowding. The Vice-Chancellor emphasizes that the university already has adopted protection measures for various aspects of teaching. At GU, each faculty, institute and activity assesses whether, and in which situations, face masks or other protection may be needed in relation to other protective measures. From 1 September, the writing room at Viktoriagatan 30 will be opened for adapted digital exams

14 August, 2020

Since mid-March, the exam room at Viktoriagatan 30 has been closed and digital exams have been written remotely. According to a decision from the Vice-Chancellor on 4 June, an adapted but limited return to regular campus activities for the autumn term 2020 is possible. This means that the exam room can reopen, but to a limited extent. Based on this, the head of institute in turn decides whether the education can have a physical exam or not. In order to maintain the requirements for safety and at the same time follow the Swedish Public Health Agency’s guidelines to minimize the risk of the spread of infection, a number of measures are implemented in and in connection with the office. Map points out medical historical sites in Gothenburg

12 August, 2020

How long was the maternity hospital at Linnéplatsen used and what was done in the Dispensary at Fattighusån? In your browser you can now see a map of a hundred medical historical sites with pictures and information. The new map has been produced by the Museum of Medical History and shows historic care and nursing facilities in Gothenburg. The hope is that the map will be an exciting way to get to know historical places in the local environment. You can choose to click your way across the map at home, or go on a historical hike. You can find the map on the Medical History Museum’s website (the map works best in a web browser).
