Akademiliv congratulates Martin Ott on his professorship in molecular cell biology at Sahlgrenska Academy! His research revolves around mitochondria, which are sometimes called the power plant of the cell because of its role in the extraction of energy during metabolism. Current projects in his group evaluate the molecular mechanisms by which mitochondrial proteins are formed, as well as how they participate in the construction of mitochondrial protein complexes such as the respiratory chain. An ongoing project concerns the organization and regulation of mitochondrial gene expression using methods ranging from cell-based assays to high-resolution electron microscopy. In Gothenburg, he is especially looking forward to further developing the research program for human cell systems and metabolic reprogramming, which usually takes place during development, dietary changes, or diseases.
