The National Audit Office criticizes the expansion of nursing education in a new report
The Government’s investment in training more nurses, specialist nurses and midwives has not led to any major increase in the labor force in these professions during the review period 2015-2017, the National Audit Office states in a critical report. The problem does not lie with the higher education institutions, but in the assignment and the fact that the government has not taken the conditions of the higher education institutions into account, above all the lack of clinical placements, according to the report. The goals set for the period 2015-2017 could not be met; worst result was seen for specialist nurses, where the goal was to train 600 new ones while the result was 42. The goal for midwives was just under 300, with the result 50. The goal for nurses was 700, and the result 567.
The supplementary program for physicians pauses admission
The supplementary program for physicians with a medical degree from outside of the EU will be extended by one semester to connect to the new medical program. The program will begin with a course in academic Swedish and the clinical part of the education will be expanded. The program will therefore not admit any new students to the autumn term 2021. The first round of admissions to the new program opens the spring term 2022, and the planned start is the autumn term 2022. Continued strong finances – but smaller surplus than expected for the faculty
In 2020, the surplus for Sahlgrenska Academy was SEK 15 million, which is lower than budgeted. The increased number of students meant that the faculty did not have to repay any part of the maximum funding amount. In 2020, employees took less holiday than usual, which means that the faculty’s holiday debt increased. The pandemic has probably also led to delays for research projects, where external funding has not been used at the planned pace.
The faculty’s accumulated surplus is SEK 522 million, but is tied up in special purposes, such as start-up grants and new recruitments. This year, the faculty will receive a temporary pandemic reinforcement of SEK 11.4 million from the state, and a permanent reinforcement will be presented later in the year.

The Inauguration of New Professors has been moved forward to next spring
Due to the continued spread of infection, the Vice-Chancellor has decided to move the planned Inauguration of New Professors to next spring. Since the Inauguration of New Professors was also postponed last year, the decision means that three cohorts of new professors will be inaugurated in the Congress Center at the Swedish Fair in May 2022.
Discussions are ongoing about how the autumn’s Conferement of Doctoral Degrees can be carried out in a safe way. Both last year’s and this year’s Conferement of Doctoral Degrees are planned to be given in October 2021, but it is not clear how the ceremony will be designed. This year’s Retirement Ceremony and the ceremony for Zealous and devoted service, which would have taken place in January and February, have already been canceled.

Recording of the first seminar on register research available for a limited time
Fredrik Nyberg, visiting professor of register epidemiology, has recently started a seminar series on register research. In the first seminar, he gives an overview of how register research is done. He talks about the research process from ear to loaf – idea, ethics, data ordering, analysis and results. Until March 1, you who missed the seminar can see a recording. The next seminar in the series will be given on February 25, when Ola Rolfson and Erik Bülow from the Department of Orthopedics will talk about what is a clinically important difference in register-based research. Note – the seminars are held in Swedish.
