FACULTY ELECTION. The Nomination Committee has now presented its proposal for eight members and two replacements that may be included in the next faculty board. Three of the proposed members are on the current faculty board, while seven of the names are new. Here, the proposed members also bring forward some of the issues that they think are important to our board and faculty.
The Nomination Committee’s chairman Per Lindahl comments the proposal:
“We are pleased with the composition of candidates for the new faculty board. Their combined competence and experience reflects Sahlgrenska Academy’s various institutions and activities well. In addition to excellence in research and teaching, we have valued previous experience of faculty-wide work and collaboration with external actors, such as Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Region Västra Götaland who are important partners, as well as national and international research bodies.”

Akademiliv asked the proposed members to describe in what way they can contribute to the work of the board, and also mention an issue that they think is important.
Eric Carlström, Professor of Caring Sciences with a focus on leadership and care organization, Institute of Health and Care Sciences.
What can you add to the work of the board?
“I can add a lot when it comes to management issues. My area is public administration with a focus on the health care sector. The Academy Board makes important strategic decisions for both medicine, dentistry and health and care sciences. I can help ensure the future benefit of the entire academy.”
Mention an issue you think is important.
“An important question is how teaching and research should be conducted with the changed conditions that new premises entail. Although it is uncertain whether I myself will remain in working life when the biggest changes take place, they must be as good as possible. The activities are among our most socially beneficial sectors. Through its research and education, Sahlgrenska Academy is becoming increasingly important. I am happy to participate and contribute to continued good development.”
Maria Falkenberg, Professor of Biomedical Laboratory Science, Institute of Biomedicine.
What can you add to the work of the board?
“I have worked a lot with scientific review work at national and international level. Hopefully it can be useful.”
Mention an issue you think is important.
“Increased collaboration with, for example, Chalmers to attract national research initiatives to Gothenburg. I am thinking of large national investments such as SciLifeLab in Stockholm-Uppsala and Max IV in Lund. Very good research is emerging around these initiatives. If we do not get a larger share of national investments, there is a risk that Sahlgrenska Academy and the University of Gothenburg will fall behind.”
Victoria Franke Stenport, Professor of Oral Prosthetics, Institute of Odontology.
What can you add to the work of the board?
“My experiences of collaborating with industry partners and various dental organizations, both in terms of research and education, as well as a translational research background in dentistry can hopefully be useful. I also have extensive experience of teaching at various levels.”
Mention an issue you think is important.
“There are many important issues, but an important overall issue for the future is how to strengthen the collaboration with Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Region Västra Götaland in both research and teaching.”
Erik Larsson Lekholm, Professor of Bioinformatics, with a special focus on large-scale analysis of DNA and RNA, Institute of Biomedicine.
What can you add to the work of the board?
“In my research, bioinformatics has a central role and there I believe I can add an important and current perspective. Storage and processing of large-scale biological data will soon be part of almost all biomedical research, and Sahlgrenska Academy needs to stay ahead and make this as easy as possible for researchers. I also think that my experience from assessing research, for example for VR, the Cancer Foundation and SciLifeLab, can be valuable.”
Mention an issue you think is important.
“It is difficult to say what is most important, but I think collaborations across subject boundaries, for example with Chalmers, are important.”
Ola Rolfson, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, Institute of Clinical Sciences.
What can you add to the work of the board?
“Hopefully, my experience of board assignments and management team work within various organizations can contribute to the work with long-term strategies for the faculty to deliver world-leading education and research that leads to better care for the individual.”
Mention an issue you think is important.
“Issues concerning the conditions for collaboration with other faculties and universities, healthcare and industry as well as international collaborations are important.”
Anders Rosengren, Professor of Molecular Medicine, Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology.
What can you add to the work of the board?
“I have a broad translational background, from basic research to clinical research, which I believe is an asset to really look at the breadth of the faculty and get a holistic perspective in the decisions. I have been on the board for the past three years and it has given me a good overview and feeling for the long-term issues.”
Mention an issue you think is important.
“I do not see that there is a specific issue that stands out as absolutely most important. The faculty faces a number of challenges, with the new medical education, the construction works and the ongoing financial issues as some examples. What I personally see as important is to use the lessons from the pandemic in the best way as we now look ahead. It is about weaving together physical encounters with technical solutions better than before, reviewing travel, reaching out to the public in new ways. Look at the Book Fair in Gothenburg, which through digital broadcasts last year reached a completely new audience. These are examples that we can be inspired by to become more innovative in our ways of conveying knowledge and collaborating within and outside academia.”
Magnus Simrén, Professor of Medical Gastroenterology, Institute of Medicine.
What can you add to the work of the board?
“Long-term and broad experience of work in clinical activities, clinical and translational research, and teaching of students at undergraduate level, as well as doctors and other professional categories at postgraduate level within Region Västra Götaland, Sahlgrenska University Hospital and University of Gothenburg. Extensive experience of international work at various academic institutions, within various interest organizations, and within the framework of clinical and academic collaborations.”
Mention an issue you think is important.
“To ensure that Sahlgrenska Life becomes optimal for teaching, clinical work, and clinical and translational research for Region Västra Götaland, Sahlgrenska University Hospital and University of Gothenburg, as well as for partners.”
Anna Winkvist, Professor of Nutrition, Institute of Medicine.
What can you add to the work of the board?
“A broad outlook on research thanks to experience from postgraduate education in the USA, research at several universities in Sweden, board work at STINT, chairmanship of evaluation groups at the Swedish Research Council and ALF, and own research ranging from metabolomics, randomized clinical interventions, epidemiology and qualitative methods. Also a lot of experience of teaching at undergraduate, advanced level and in postgraduate education.”
Mention an issue you think is important.
“It is important for the board to work for strengthened collaboration with Sahlgrenska University Hospital and VGR so that we have a strong and competitive platform in Gothenburg in medical research.”
Gunnel Hensing, Professor of Social Medicine, Institute of Medicine (replacement).
What can you add to the work of the board?
“Knowledge of community medical research and education together with my experience from various research councils will add an important perspective.”
Mention an issue you think is important.
“Sahlgrenska Academy needs to be an attractive workplace for young researchers and in order to reach that goal we need a good academic work environment, opportunities for international exchange and collaboration and a strong organization to develop good applications for research grants. We need young researchers to run a good operations, but above all to contribute to solving societal challenges, such as the unequal distribution of ill health between different population groups.”
Lars Ny, Senior Lecturer in Oncology with a focus on immunooncology, Institute of Clinical Sciences (replacement).
What can you add to the work of the board?
“In my role as a researcher, teacher and doctor with a broad network locally, nationally and internationally, I will pursue issues for both increased breadth and excellence for the Sahlgrenska Academy to develop into an even more successful and developing academic environment.”
Mention an issue you think is important.
“Increased collaboration and integrated activities between Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Sahlgrenska Academy to strengthen clinical and translational research in a faculty-wide format.”
