POSTGRADUATE STUDIES. Thirty PhD students from the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers and also other universities were admitted to the first run of the elective course “AI in Healthcare”, which has now started. A more specialized course on practical implementation of AI in healthcare is also planned for the fall.
The course started with an introduction of the principles and concepts that are fundamental to AI. A group of teachers from both Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg are running the course. One of them is Linn Söderholm, who has just completed her master’s studies in medical technology at Chalmers:
“During the course, examples of AI from current research and clinical applications will be presented. In addition, towards the end of the course we will have lectures about the implementation of AI in healthcare, focusing on topics such as safety, ethics, and interpretability,” says Linn Söderholm.
Many people involved
The classes are given by guest lecturers within various fields of expertise.
“We are delighted that so many people decided to get involved and that a total of 38 lecturers will participate. We have lecturers from six departments at GU and four at Chalmers. We are also pleased that lecturers from Region Västra Götaland and various companies in the industry will participate,” says Linn Söderholm.
In addition to GU and Chalmers, the course is taken by PhD students from other universities outside the Gothenburg region, such as Uppsala University, Halmstad University and Karlstad University.
So far, the response from both PhD students and lecturers has been very positive.
Advanced course in the fall
The teaching team behind the course is now working on a more specialized course in the field: “Artificial intelligence in healthcare: Applications”. The course will give 1.5 credits and will run in the fall (23-25 October 2024). The course will be available for application for PhD students when the course catalog opens on April 1-21.
In addition to Linn Söderholm, the teaching team behind the course consists of Robert Feldt (Professor of Computer Science at Chalmers), Kristian Samuelsson (Professor of Orthopedic Surgery), Eric Hamrin Senorski (Associate Professor of Physiotherapy), Justin Schneiderman (Senior Lecturer and AI advisor to the faculty).
