They received ALF positions in the spring of 2023

24 April, 2023

CLINICAL RESEARCH. A total of 42 researchers were granted ALF positions in the latest round of applications. The positions are divided among physicians and other health professions and will be assumed on January 1, 2024. A senior clinical ALF researcher position goes to Elias Johansson, associate professor and specialist in neurology.

Elias Johansson, associate professor at the Section for Clinical Neuroscience and specialist doctor at the Neurology Clinic at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, receives a higher clinical ALF research position. The position involves ALF-funded research time of 50 percent of full time for two years with the possibility of a two-year extension. In addition to part-time salary, project funds of SEK 300,000 per year are added. The service ends upon receipt of the combination service.

Elias Johansson is researching the treatment of dense carotid stenosis, that is, calcification in carotid arteries which is a common cause of blood clots, which in turn can lead to stroke. The position gives him time for both planning and implementing new projects and also for supervising younger researchers from several different clinics. The research group focuses on the most dense stenoses.

Elias Johansson

“Carotid stenosis are routinely surgically removed to avoid relapses. Some of these are operated on unnecessarily due to poor diagnostics. For these, we are developing new diagnostic methods and the plan is to introduce them into sharp mode within a year, which will then be evaluated over many years”, says Elias Johansson, whose group is also working on the development of treatment:

“Some patients have a great need for treatment, but cannot be operated on in the usual way. We are now doing preliminary studies on whether these can perhaps be helped by vascular closure, which is so far leaning towards this. If these preliminary studies turn out well, then we can start the first trials on humans within about two years, but it will take many years before such a form of treatment can become clinical routine”.

From autumn 2023, Elias Johansson will also be responsible for the neurological investigations of carotid stenosis at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

Several different ALF positions

An ALF position at doctoral level means funded research time of 50 percent of full time over two years. For ALF position with doctoral degree and Higher clinical ALF researcher position, project funds of 200,000 and 300,000 kroner per year are also included. For the latter service types, there is also the possibility of an extension for a further two years. Here you can read more about the different service types (in Swedish) >>
