GU Journalen: Sahlgrenska Academy researchers bring in the most external funding to the University

14 October, 2022

GRANTS. The top 100 researchers brought in a total of SEK 4.2 billion in external funding to the University between 2017 and 2021, according to a review by GU Journalen. Researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy have been particularly successful, bringing in SEK 2.4 billion in this five-year period. Of the five top names on the list, four are from our faculty.

Göran Bergström, professor of cardiovascular research, brought in the most during this period at over SEK 193 million. He is director of Scapis, a one-of-a-kind knowledge bank for researchers who want to study cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. The leading funding organization is Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation, but Vinnova and the Swedish Research Council also support the project.

“Among many reasons, I think the project has gotten so much money because the explicit goal is to share. All researchers keep their data to themselves, but the actual point of the research is to contribute to shared knowledge. Scapis is available to everyone interested in cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases,” says Göran Bergström to GU Journalen.

Sahlgrenska Academy dominates the top

Second on the list is Gunnar Köhlin at the School of Business, Economics and Law, but spots three, four, and five are occupied by Sahlgrenska Academy researchers: Fredrik Bäckhed (SEK 152 million), Henrik Zetterberg (SEK 127 million), and Elisabet Carlsohn (nearly SEK 125 million).

Elisabet Carlsohn is head of Core Facilities, which provides access to expert consultation, training, and sophisticated equipment. The visible result is the overall allocation of external funding to Core Facilities’ infrastructures, which would not have been possible without its fantastic experts, according to Elisabet Carlsohn.

“The reason we’re so successful when it comes to external funding is because of long-term work, extensive involvement among research groups, and broad expertise among our experts, as well as our close collaboration with research groups that conduct high-quality research.”
