Nominate members to the consultative assembly for election of a vice-chancellor

20 June, 2022

VICE-CHANCELLOR ELECTION. Sahlgrenska Academy will appoint 13 members to the consultative assembly, which is preparing the appointment of a vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellor. The members will be appointed through faculty election in September. All employees may nominate members, which must be done by August 14.

On June 30, 2023, Eva Wiberg’s current mandate period as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gothenburg will end. The University Board has initiated the process of nominating the Vice-Chancellor for the next mandate period. The Government will then make the decision on the appointment of a vice-chancellor after a recommendation from the University Board.

According to the Higher Education Ordinance, the University Board must propose a candidate for vice-chancellor after hearing from teachers, other employees, and students, as decided by the board. At the University of Gothenburg, this is done through a consultative assembly to which staff and students are entitled to appoint members. The consultative assembly has an advisory function and gives feedback on proposals for candidate(s) for the position of vice-chancellor and/or deputy vice-chancellor. The consultative assembly is to comprise 70 members, including 30 teacher representatives, 20 representatives of other employees, and 20 student representatives.

How to nominate

Sahlgrenska Academy will appoint a total of 13 members (7 teacher representatives, 6 for other employees) and 4 group alternates (2 representatives each for teachers and other employees) to the consultative assembly through an academy-wide election. The Academy’s employees are welcome to suggest candidates for the consultative assembly. The nomination committee must receive the nominations by August 14. Members of the consultative assembly should be ready to take their posts on September 20, 2022.

All Sahlgrenska Academy employees are welcome to nominate candidates for election to the consultative assembly. Nominations should include a brief explanation and the individual’s CV (2 pages). Email proposals to valberedning@sahlgrenska.gu.se with the subject NOMINATION. Nominees must have been asked, be eligible (see below), and have agreed to be nominated.

Who may vote

Eligible individuals to appoint members to the consultative assembly are employees of Sahlgrenska Academy whose employment is at least 50% of full-time, in a position that is permanent or spans at least two consecutive years. The appointment must be held two months before the University Board’s special decision on the assignment of members. Individuals on parental leave/leave of absence are considered active. Teaching categories include: professors, post-retirement professors, associate professors, lecturers, associate senior lecturers, research associates, post-docs and visiting lecturers.

Bachelor, master’s and doctoral students appoint representatives in a separate election and are therefore not entitled to vote in this election.

Who may be elected

Individuals are eligible to be members of the consultative assembly if they are eligible to appoint members according to the provisions above, and if their appointments span the consultative assembly’s period of office (2022–2023).

Nomination committee

The Faculty Board has appointed the following nomination committee:

  • Per Lindahl, Institute of Biomedicine (chair) (per.lindahl@wlab.gu.se)

  • Gabriel Bake, Sahlgrenska Academy Office (gabriel.bake@gu.se)

Election process

The nomination committee will present a proposal for members in late August. The election will then be held from September 7–14. The election will be held electronically using the Sunet Survey tool.

The regulatory framework for the election of members to the consultative assembly is described in the policy document RULES FOR APPOINTING A CONSULTATIVE ASSEMBLY AND ITS WORK (Reg. no V 2018/322, adopted April 27, 2018) and can be found here: 1696423_v-2018-399-valforfarande-for-lararrepresentanter-i-universitetets-styrelse.pdf (gu.se)
