DEGREE PROJECTS. More than a year ago, Sahlgrenska Academy adopted procedures for ethical review of degree projects at the undergraduate and master’s levels to give students and teachers a tool to help them ensure that degree projects are conducted in ethically assured and safe forms. Supervisors for medical student degree projects now have a more comprehensive document to guide them.
The new procedures mean that student projects affecting people or animals, regardless of whether they are covered by the Ethical Review Act or the Animal Welfare Act, now need to pass an ethical review. The head of department or division or the clinic administrator within the health care system has overall responsibility. The supervisor is responsible for ensuring that the applicable valid approval from the Ethical Review Authority or the Animal Ethics Board is in place when the degree project begins.
The course managers for semester 10 of the Medical Program and the research ethics councils at Sahlgrenska Academy and the Institute of Medicine have produced a brief document so supervisors are well-informed and have plenty of time to plan before the next degree projects.
