NEW LAB. A brand-new biomedical engineering research laboratory is being built inside the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg. This week the builders are on-site and starting out with the radio frequency (RF) shielding walls, ceiling and floor with special steel barriers.
– It is great to be up and running and the work is progressing at a good pace. Our plan is to have the RF shielding completed on Friday May 7th. The builders work mainly late in the afternoons and in the evenings in order to minimize disturbances to the normal activities of the hospital, says Henric Johansson, project manager at Västfastigheter.
The new lab signifies a major step forward for research collaboration in the area of advanced biomedical engineering on the west coast of Sweden. It will provide improved opportunities to collaborate and conduct patient-centered projects by researchers from clinics, academia and companies. The lab will help enable pioneering research related to medtech solutions in areas such as neuroscience, oncology, trauma, cardiology and psychiatry.
The room is 36 sqm in size and will have double shielding for examinations and treatment: an outer RF shield and an inner magnetically shielded room, a so-called MSR (Magnetically Shielded Room) that blocks all ambient magnetic fields. The outer RF shielding is required for the cutting-edge microwave research that is planned. If everything goes according to plan, the lab will be completed in August 2021 with an opening ceremony soon thereafter.
Facts
- The lab is project-led and run by MedTech West in deep collaboration with its parties Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Chalmers Technical University, the Sahlgrenska Academy at Gothenburg University, University of Borås and the Region Västra Götaland.
- The lab is located in the Radiology department on the ground level of the new Image and Intervention Center (BoIC) on Blå Stråket 5, which is the newest hospital building on the Sahlgrenska campus with six floors containing the very latest medical equipment.
- The lab is part of a project partly financed by the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket), with support from the European Regional Development Fund.
