REFERRAL. Gothenburg University is one of many referral bodies for the upcoming Swedish standard for how sustainable development should be guided and managed in municipalities and county councils. This standard is intended to guide the implementation of the UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. The proposal has been prepared by the Swedish Committee SIS / TK 588 / AG 03, Sustainable Cities and Communities. The referral contains a proposal for a Swedish national standard to provide guidance to elected representatives and service personnel in municipalities and regions in the work of integrating and strengthening sustainable development and promoting cooperation in contributing to the fulfillment of the UN Agenda, in their regular governance and management. 2030 and the global sustainability goals.
The Gothenburg Center for Sustainable Development (GMV) has been commissioned to handle the preparation of the referral on behalf of the University of Gothenburg. GMV now gives university staff the opportunity to participate in the process and to submit comments on SIS standard proposals. Manager Kerstin Hemström wants your comments by August 10, introduced in the special response form. Subsequently, GMV and the Center for Sustainable Urban Development will prepare a response from the University of Gothenburg to SIS.
About the proposal
The standard aims to provide guidance to elected officials and service personnel in municipalities and regions in their efforts to integrate and reinforce sustainable development in their regular governance and management, and to promote collaboration to help meet the UN Agenda 2030 and the global sustainability goals.
SS 854000 has a process-oriented approach based on the Plan-Implement-Follow-Up-Improve model (PDCA in English) to facilitate a continuous improvement of the ability of municipalities and regions to meet the challenges of society. This means, among other things, that the standard can be introduced step by step based on the degree of maturity of the municipality or region, and can, for example, provide support in preventing and managing risks and opportunities based on the sustainability work already in place. The standard emphasizes the importance of cross-sectoral and cross-border partnerships to solve major societal challenges, and the fact that Agenda 2030 provides a comprehensive framework that can, for example, contribute to an increased understanding of both the emergence and the consequences of challenges such as Covid-19.
The intention is for the proposal to be adopted and published as a Swedish standard. The final standard may in certain parts deviate from the proposal depending on the result of the Swedish referral procedure. The answers to this referral will form the basis for the Committee’s decision.
