COLUMN. In the last newsletter of the semester from Akademiliv, Agneta Holmäng sends her thanks for all the great achievements of the last semester and wishes everyone a pleasant summer.
As dean I am very pleased and grateful for the contributions made in both research and teaching during the past semester. I particularly want to recognize our dedicated teachers, who do amazing and important work in their teaching but seldom get the recognition they deserve. I was particularly happy when teachers in our Nursing Program were named recipients of the prize for internationalization that is awarded for the best internationalization work at Swedish medical faculties. Once again, a hearty congratulations!
valuable advice from international experts
When we return after vacation, we can look forward to the final report from the RED19 quality evaluation project. Unlike the previous external evaluation of research, RED10, this evaluation is not a competition. It does not provide us a list of the best or who is considered leaders in their fields. Instead it gives us valuable advice from international experts on how we can strive to improve. RED19 is part of the quality assurance procedures constantly taking place, including within the university’s research and leadership. I have the impression that the external panels that have worked on the report have been both committed and competent. I am also convinced that the report will provide very sensible input that can help us achieve even stronger research. The results of RED19 will be one of the items on the agenda when we start working at the end of August with Sahlgrenska Academy’s leadership, both the heads of departments and the Faculty Board. Then we will focus on how we can best make use of the areas identified in the report as needing development. Another important theme will be the best way to plan our teacher staffing with respect to our subjects, both in terms of research and teaching.
a completely open call for applications aimed at young researchers showing excellence in their work
We currently are advertising two senior lecturer positions in medical and health sciences research (the closing date for applications is September 2). The ad can be viewed here: https://www.gu.se/omuniversitetet/aktuellt/lediga-jobb/Lediga_anstallningar-detaljsida/?id=4333. Issuing a completely open call for applications aimed at young researchers who have shown excellence in their work is a new initiative at Sahlgrenska Academy. It is a good offer, which includes a grant to be freely used for research in addition to fully funded permanent employment. Of course we want to attract talented external applicants, but we would like to see applications from the talented young researchers already working here who have not yet been given the opportunity for permanent employment. The Faculty Board has decided that two such positions will be announced annually for two years and then evaluated by our government research funding body for possible continuation. Similar initiatives in Uppsala and in Lund have previously turned out well, and I think we can expect many strong applications.
many thanks to all of you for your efforts during the semester
The work to prepare the site for construction of Naturvetenskap Life at Medicinareberget has unfortunately caused disturbances, especially for those closest to the construction site. We hope all agreements will soon be in place for those who need alternative premises in connection with this construction project. At the same time, planning for Sahlgrenska Life also continues. We have several active committees with participants from Sahlgrenska Academy working on the project. A first interim report regarding the building brief has just been submitted to the vice-chancellor. This work will continue in the autumn, and we expect to complete it by the end of the year.
Finally, I would like to thank you all very much for the work you have done during the semester. I hope you can look forward to much-needed rest and relaxation during the summer.
Enjoy your time off, take the opportunity to regain your strength before the autumn and have a lovely summer.
