INFRASTRUCTURE. The Swedish Research Council’s (VR) prioritization of national research infrastructure is done through a recurring, cyclical 2-year process. The first step of the process is a needs inventory with the aim of pointing out areas where the need for new national infrastructure is clear. The outcome of the needs inventory is then used as a basis for VR’s targeted call for support for national infrastructure.
The next need inventory is carried out in autumn 2019: between September 11 and October 9, managements of universities will be given the opportunity to submit proposals for the need for infrastructure. Proposals can also be submitted by authorities with research responsibility, research financiers and research groups. Sahlgrenska Academy’s coordination of proposals
For the University of Gothenburg, the faculties have been invited to submit priority proposals on behalf of the University of Gothenburg. Employees at the Sahlgrenska Academy are invited to submit proposals to the coordinator joanna.larsson@gu.se no later than 21 August.

Suggestions should include:
1) What the proposal is about:
- Need for brand new national research infrastructure.
- Need to bring together and in an essential way develop existing resources for a research infrastructure. All parts included must be of national interest, and the merging of them should give a clear added value for research in the field.
- Need for extensive development within existing research infrastructures with funding from the Swedish Research Council. The goal of the upgrade is to create a significant change in the scientific production or a technical approach. Routine maintenance or gradual improvements are not covered.
- Need for new international research infrastructure – both the need for Swedish participation in building new international research infrastructure and Swedish membership in existing research infrastructure.
2) Estimated number of users of the proposed infrastructure and the subject area (s) of these users, if relevant?
3) Description of scientific relevance to the infrastructure – what difference can the infrastructure make?
4) Reason for why the infrastructure should be at national / international level (VR level)?
Note that the A2 priority areas (see pages 21-23 in the guidebook) need to be re-registered in order to be relevant for the call for proposals in 2021. Applicants from the year’s call for proposals that are not granted funds also apply (VR decision 19/9). For the latter group, we assume that applications that are rejected must be re-notified if you do not report otherwise until August 26.
For the university, the proposals are prepared for the Vice-Chancellor by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Göran Landberg, with the support of the University’s research committee. Notice of which proposals will be submitted by the University of Gothenburg will be provided by September 11 at the latest. Subsequently, the proposals are finalized by the responsible proposer together with the responsible research advisor at FIK and notified to VR during the period 11 Sept – 9 Oct.
