EDUCATION. Beginning this autumn, the speech therapy program has a new format and new content. The program’s new program syllabus was launched this week with a kick-off event, bringing speech therapists from throughout the region to Medicinareberget.
Sweeping changes in Sahlgrenska Academy’s speech therapy program are being implemented. The program is interdisciplinary and includes, in addition to speech therapy, courses in medicine, linguistics and psychology. In the new program syllabus, more space is given to speech therapy as a result of developments in both research and the clinical field.
“The new program syllabus also includes three new local objectives that address person-centered care, the enhanced research capacity of clinical operations and equal care,” says Tove Lagerberg, program coordinator of Sahlgrenska Academy’s speech therapy program. “In addition, the program incorporates specific professional courses each semester to provide increased opportunity for the students to shape their professional role and lay a solid foundation for their future working life.”
During the day of the kick-off, presentations by Professor Lena Hartelius and Ingrid Henriksson, chair of the program committee, outlined society’s need for speech therapists and how work on the new program syllabus evolved. Associate Professor Charlotta Saldert talked about person-centered care, and coordinators for the new courses described the intended learning outcomes and learning activities. Program Coordinator Tove Lagerberg described the educational approch and content of the program.
The day ended with Assistant Section Chief Christina Persson proposing a toast, and then participants and attendees mingled and talked.
The kick-off took place on August 23 in Birgit Thilander Hall. In addition to speech therapists from the region, colleagues from other higher education institutions offering speech therapy courses were invited as well as colleagues from other degree programs at Sahlgrenska Academy.
