BUILDING PLANS. A food court with a varied lunch offering, a fitness facility offering different forms of exercise, and a common reception area for everything related to Sahlgrenska University Hospital and the Medicinareberget neighborhood. These were some of the suggestions put forward during the workshop to discuss the support and services that Sahlgrenska Life could offer that was held just before the Midsummer holiday.
Sahlgrenska Life is a collaborative project between the University of Gothenburg and Region Västra Götaland that aims to strengthen life sciences by creating closer ties between the Medicinareberget neighborhood and the hospital complex with new buildings. The project is in its infancy, and is still in the initial stage of the construction process, which could lead to new buildings at and across Per Dubbsgatan.
Just before the Midsummer holiday, a workshop was held to provide support for discussions about what service offering is needed when our workplace develops.
“The workshop is intended to broaden the discussion at an early stage – before anything is decided – as a way of learning the needs and preferences of those who are at the hospital and in the Medicinareberget neighborhood on a daily basis. The results of the workshop will then become part of a preliminary study,” says Andreas Eklöf, a consultant from Inobi who is in charge of the preliminary study work for Sahlgrenska Life.
The forty-some workshop participants represented Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Sahlgrenska Science Park, the property developers, Folktandvården Västra Götaland, Sahlgrenska Academy, the Biomedical Library, and other parts of the university.
Efter en översiktlig introduktion till teorierna om hur goda mötesplatser kan skapas, fick alla deltagare
After a brief introduction to theories on how good meeting places can be created, all participants were given the opportunity to write down all the support functions and service facilities that they would like to see available within Sahlgrenska Life. The participants were then divided into five different work groups, which went through and refined the various suggestions. The groups were also asked to indicate what location within Sahlgrenska Life and within the entire area was suitable for the various suggestions. They then presented their ideas to the others.
Here are just some of the ideas that emerged during the workshop:
- An 8-kilometer exercise track from Änggården, up over the roofs of Sahlgrenska Life, and then on to Medicinareberget.
- A hotel that can be used by anyone – guest researchers, patients, relatives, conference participants.
- A conference facility.
- A pub.
- A grocery store.
- An electric bus that runs in a loop within Medicinareberget.
- A fleet of loaner bicycles, plus a bicycle workshop.
- A bookstore.
- A dining area for entertaining, where you do not have to stand in line when you have visitors.
- Special workstations that visitors can borrow, preferably near a café.
A varied lunch offering was brought up by several participants during the workshop. A food court (i.e. an open area where a single group could choose from different restaurants or bring a lunch from home and still sit together) was the idea that had the most thumbs up when the workshop came to an end. A fitness facility offering both gym training and group activities, preferably run by one of the wellness care chains, was also underscored as being particularly important, along with a reception area that could serve as a common entrance to everything Sahlgrenska Life has to offer.
The results of the workshop will now become part of the preliminary study currently in progress. The final results of this study will be presented in early October.
