Eric Hanse: Fun and exciting time for the development of Medicinareberget

27 June, 2017

COLUMN. All ideas are now being put on the table in the work on Sahlgrenska Life, writes Pro-Dean Eric Hanse in his column. The projects are arranging both workshops and field trips to identify University of Gothenburg’s and Västra Götaland Region’s shared future needs.

This is an exciting time for Sahlgrenska Academy. We are at the beginning of an extensive period of development that I am convinced can give us better conditions for research, education and collaboration in health sciences. The university’s decision to gather the life sciences at Medicinareberget will bring us closer to our cooperative partners in the academic community, healthcare and industry, and through the Sahlgrenska Life project, we have the potential to gain an academic environment that is characterized to an even higher degree by a translational approach, creativity and meetings across subject and profession boundaries.

The organization around the project is now being built out. Soon, we will appoint four new working groups in charge of education, animal management, replacement facilities and research facilities at Medicinareberget. We also expressed the desire that a construction project manager be appointed for Sahlgrenska Academy as a professional support in the continued process.

Right now, when we are in the earliest phase, we have the chance to express all of the ideas that can give us a real dream campus. For me, the construction of new buildings is of no value in and of itself; it is our future needs and our operating objectives that are crucial.

The first stage goal during the building process is the prestudy for Sahlgrenska Life that will be presented this autumn. The prestudy will provide a good overview of what needs we have share with Sahlgrenska University Hospital that new buildings can meet. In various workshops, we are now putting all ideas on the table, and if we like the ideas that come forth, we will investigate them further to see if they can be fulfilled. Soon, for example, we will hold a workshop on the support and the service that we need to have nearby, such as the possibility of coffee breaks, overnight stays, exercise, recreation and other more social functions. At the workshop, we will discuss what s atlle kunnaoner vi behöver i vår vardag, och även var sådana funitonenr bsät borde placeras.ekreationionsplaner, och att kommunuch functions we believe we will need in our daily activities in the future, as well as where such functions could be placed.

The prestudy will alsounder byggprocessen ning,  ämnesgränser. som präglas av kreativitet, iomedicinsk forksning iten.r att sammanfattas i den förstui include a horizon scanning analysis that identifies the trends that exist in terms of development in biomedical research and university healthcare in the world. Several rewarding field trips, including visits to London, Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm, have shown us the possibilities we considered earlier and increased our understanding of how the building processes work. Most recently, a large delegation from Gothenburg paid a visit to Karolinska Institutet and New Karolinska Solna.

We are at such an early phase in the process that there are many questions we cannot fully answer right now. But we are more than happy to share the answers we do have. All questions are welcome at our question e-mail address at medicinareberget@gu.se.
