Campus plan adopted – highlights the potential of Medicinareberget

16 May, 2017

MEDICINAREBERGET. A brand new campus plan establishes the parameters for the physical upgrade of Medicinareberget from now until 2040. The essence of the plan is to shorten walking distances and create a more compact layout for the buildings.

The university’s facilities maintenance policy stipulates that all buildings and areas that provide services of various kinds are to have a development plan. The campus plan for Medicinareberget is the pioneering effort. Representing a consensus about the long-term contours of Medicinareberget, the plan was designed by the Division of Strategic Property Development in consultation with Sahlgrenska Academy and the Faculty of Science.. Akademiska Hus, which owns much of the property on campus, also collaborated.

The plan proceeds from the vision of a campus that promotes cooperation in the Life Sciences, is vibrant and attractive for staff and residents alike, reflects a distinct profile and sets the stage for ongoing improvements.

Eric Hanse

According to Subdean Eric Hanse, ”The plan offers a more compact layout for the buildings, consolidates services in the core area and uses Medicinaregatan as a natural border for the campus. Our long-term objectives are to consolidate further, lay the groundwork for expansion and additional buildings, permit shorter walking distances, spark cooperation in the Life Sciences and make the campus even more dynamic than it is today.”

Four strategies for achieving the goals

After a multiyear project that included Vision 2020 – Medicinareberget, the goals of the physical upgrade may be summed up as a collaborative, living and open-ended campus with a distinct profile. Assigning all activities and support services to the southern end enables closer communication among both buildings and people. Publicly oriented services will be placed more pragmatically, facing the street at the new boundary of the area. Clearly defined concourses will invigorate the campus and link it to public transportation at Per Dubbsgatan and Guldhedsgatan. Buildings and gangways will seamlessly connect the campus and hospital area. Housing will be built for students and visiting researchers. Green areas, meeting places and other venues for social and recreational activities will be expanded.

Project policy updated continually

The campus plan zeroes in on two concepts that will inform the ongoing effort of the University of Gothenburg to renew Medicinareberget. The first concept is to devise translational centers that incorporate education, research and clinical practice, as well as collaboration with the private sector. The second concept is to promote cooperation in the Life Sciences throughout the city as dictated by the University Board last June.

The campus plan includes a project policy that offers a number of possible programs for shaping Medicinareberget of 2040. The policy is a living, breathing document that will be updated on a continual basis.
