FACULTY ELECTION. According to the University Board’s Rules of Procedure the term of the Pro Dean follows the term of the Dean. Subsequently, the Nomination Committee is assigned to provide suggestions for both new Dean and Pro Dean.
Later Akademiliv will come back to its readers with more information on the work in the Nomination Committee and on the process of the election of new Dean and Vice Dean.
Current Dean Olle Larkö and Pro Dean Eric Hanse continue to lead our faculty until December 31. We took the opportunity to ask some questions to Eric Hanse:
In what way do the Dean and Pro Dean need to complement each other to form a good leadership duo?
“As the Academy’s activities cover many areas, from health care, dentistry, pharmacy, pre-clinic and clinic, within both education and research, and we cooperate extensively with health care, other faculties and universities and industry, it is also undeniably a strength if management can complement each other and together have as good understanding as possible of as much as possible of all these activities. But of course, it is important that the personal chemistry is right so that you can work well together.”
What do you think of your and Olle’s abilities to work together?
“I think we complemented each other quite well. We share some of the tasks, but we do not share equally. Olle clearly takes care of most, but I have never experienced any downsides of that. If I sometimes have acted in a way that Olle might not think have been great, I have been let know of the fact, but there never was any squeaks. It is simply amazingly smooth and nice to work with Olle. We also have a very good and professional support from the Academy Office.”
What do you like the most about the assignment as Pro Dean?
“I think it is mostly great fun. Being on a lot of meetings, and responding to e-mail may not sound that exciting, but you know, after all, quite often one can help the activities run more smoothly. You also get to work with many very talented and ambitious people including Vice Deans, Heads of Institutes, Deputy Heads of Institutes and office staff.”
What do you like less?
“It takes a lot of time, which may not be a concern in itself, but it means that I often have bad conscience for other tasks, ie research, supervision and teaching, getting neglected.”
Can you imagine yourself continuing as part of the Academy’s management if you have such an opportunity?
“Right now I do not actually. It’s very ambiguous.”
