TEACHING. A new kind of classroom has now opened at Pedagogen. The classroom is adapted for active learning according to the concept ALC – Active Learning Classroom.
The classroom can fit 36 students at six round tables. At the wall at every table there is a large whiteboard and a large screen.
– The biggest advantage about the room is that it encourages activity, says Tomas Grysell, who is pedagogical developer at PIL University unit and project manager for the new classroom.
The thought behind the concept is that the students’ learning processes take place through active work in groups. And the teacher’s role changes from being a lecturer to being a process manager that moves amongst the groups. So far the room has functioned well.
– The students say that the room makes them relaxed, and that they are surprised that they don’t disturb one another, says Tomas Grysell.
Can be booked for occasional lessons
The ALC classroom can be booked through the University booking system after the summer. During the spring, the PIL University unit mainly uses the classroom. But the classroom isn’t fully booked for the spring. Teachers who want to try the classroom can get in contact with Tomas Grysell attomas.grysell@gu.se.
