INFRASTRUCTURE. All researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy and also within Region Västra Götaland can get four hours of free statistical consultation with experts from Health Metrics. And as of this year, the unit also offers consultations in health economics.
The Unit of Heath Metrics provides a consulting service called ‘Akademistatistik’, which offers consultancy both when applying for research funds or within the framework of an ongoing research project. Akademistatistik can provide statistical advice and assistance to all researchers at the faculty, within Sahlgrenska University Hospital and also in the rest of the Region Västra Götaland. For four hours, you can get free consultation on statistical and health economic methods help.
“We are used to dealing with, among other things, the definition of outcome measures and how these can be analyzed. Another common question is, of course, the size of the sample and the study (power calculations), which must be calculated on a combination of statistical and medical knowledge”, says Mikael Svensson, who is head of the Health Metrics unit.
Statistical progress
Another issue that the Unit is used to handling is cause and effect of interventions (causal inference), which has also become increasingly common to address also in non-experimental studies using sophisticated approaches.
“The statistical research has made great progress in the area recently. Here our researchers on the unit to be involved in planning studies and data analyses”, says Mikael.

Starting this year, the Unit of Health Metrics also provides health economic consulting. During the spring, several new health economists will be staffed, and the Unit can provide health economic expertise in both basic evaluation method as well as application expertise in various therapeutic areas.
“We are very pleased to now offer both statistical and health economic expertise”, says Michael, who himself is a Professor of Applied Health Economics:
“It is becoming increasingly common for decision makers in health care not only to require evidence about the health effects of various types of interventions, but also evidence of that a new intervention means cost-effective use of our limited resources.”
