The government wants more students from Sweden to have the opportunity to study at the very best universities in the world. Partly for this reason, the government has now decided on the bill Study in a globalized world.
More than 30,000 students from Sweden each year study abroad. To create a more effective system of financial support for studies abroad and to facilitate for these students, the Government presents a series of changes:
– The country-specific student aid amount of today should be replaced with the standard amount given for studies in Sweden (9776 per study month , 2013).
– In order not to restrict the free movement of students, a new loan covering additional cost for studies abroad (about 2,400 per month study, 2013) should be introduced.
– Students should also be given the opportunity for a much higher loan to cover tuition fees at expensive top universities.
Greater opportunities to take loans for high tuition feeshowever, requires effective measures to combat cheating. CSN is therefore given a mandate to further address the risk of erroneous payments for studies abroad.
The bill also presents some European adaptations, such as the right to study at upper-secondary level and right to an additional loan, which should be the same in Europe and in Sweden.
To give the students ability to adapt to a changing regulatory framework proposed regulations come into force on July 1st, 2015.
– That people studying abroad is good both for the individual and for society. Now we are making the study support more flexible, which allows more people to go to top universities, says Deputy Minister of Education Maria Arnholm.
