Welcome to the Sahlgrenska Academy Science Seminars, a series of seminars on Thursdays (this time at a Friday at 14-15) at 15-16. This seminar will be conducted in Lecture Hall Arvid Carlsson at Academicum and online through zoom webinar.
Here is the link to the webinar: https://gu-se.zoom.us/j/63520274709
The seminars are open to anyone interested in taking part of scientific breakthroughs and projects in the medicine and health science field. Scientists, students and other staff from GU, VGR and other organisations with the common interest of medicine and health science, welcome!
Speaker: Pekka Katajisto, KI, Helsinki
Topic:
Tissue resident stem cells (aka. adult stem cells) renew and repair our tissues. However, in order to secure tissue homeostasis, generation of new stem cells via self-renewal and their differentiation in to functional cells must be carefully balanced. During aging, multiple types of alterations directly in stem cells, or in their tissue neighbourhood can disturb this balance. The Katajisto laboratory studies both stem cell intrinsic, and extrinsic mechanisms altering tissue renewal capacity, and how such mechanisms ultimately result in the functional decline we recognize as aging.
Host: George Birchenough, dep. of Biomedicine
