In 2015, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, Gothenburg University, the Västra Götaland Region, and AstraZeneca decided to jointly invest in establishing a world-leading center for molecular and translational medicine at Gothenburg University. A total of over 600 million SEK has been invested in young, successful researchers during the initial ten-year period with the aim of creating a center where molecular and translational medical research meets healthcare and industry in an integrated and creative environment. Recently, decisions have been made to extend the initiative until 2028.

Successful recruitment processes and collaborations have led to the establishment of 26 research group leaders with experimental and/or clinical focus initiating their research groups in molecular and translational medicine at the Sahlgrenska Academy and the Faculty of Science. Since its inception, the research group leaders have published over 350 publications and received nearly 400 MSEK in external funding.

Effective collaboration with WCMM in Lund, Linköping, and Umeå for experience exchange, as well as with SciLifeLab, has created a successful national Fellows program among the total of 130 participating research group leaders. National collaboration is also strengthened through investments in data-driven life science (DDLS) and OligoNova, a research infrastructure aimed at supporting researchers in the development of therapeutic oligonucleotides.

In this inspiring environment, the Wallenberg Center for Molecular and Translational Medicine will continue into the next phase. Gothenburg University is now seeking a director whose task is to take this center and its research group leaders and research groups forward into the future.

Tasks

The duties for the director of the Wallenberg Center for Molecular and Translational Medicine at Gothenburg University include:

– Developing plans for the center’s development in the short and long term.

– Creating the best possible conditions for the recruited research group leaders to become internationally leading in their fields.

– Promoting and stimulating the further development of the “WCMTM Community,” which includes both the research group leaders and their group members, through networking activities and contributing to the national Fellows program.

– Promoting collaboration between the various parties in the center, i.e., Gothenburg University, the Västra Götaland Region, and AstraZeneca.

– Strategically developing a common agenda to promote Sweden as a life science nation coordinated with WCMM Lund, WCMM Linköping, WCMM Umeå, and SciLifeLab.

– Responsible for the budget regarding central functions in the center.

The director reports to the steering group for WCMTM, led by the rector at GU and consisting of representatives from all participating partners and funders. Organizationally, WCMTM will be under the dean of the Sahlgrenska Academy. In the operational work, the director is supported by an office function located at the Office of Research and Innovation, where also the management support for the director is located.

This announcement is a 50% assignment as director. To be qualified for the assignment, you need to be employed as a researcher, lecturer, or professor at Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg University. We expect applicants to have significant leadership experience and to be researchers in a field relevant to the position.
