COOPERATION. Hello, Lars Ny. You are a senior physician, professor, and academic representative from Sahlgrenska University Hospital’s management team. You have put together the program for the honorary symposium to be held on January 18 for former Hospital Director Ann-Marie Wennberg. Tell us about the background to the symposium!
Ann-Marie’s work as Hospital Director with a focus on research and development has had a significant impact on our organization. Now that she has stepped down, the hospital’s management would like to commemorate her achievements and we are organizing this symposium in cooperation with Sahlgrenska Academy.
And Sahlgrenska University Hospital has become so large that it’s hard to include all the various activities that are going on. This honorary symposium should be seen as a taste of something bigger, and the program is based on Ann-Marie’s many contacts, which have had a significant impact on research at the hospital.
Which topics will be discussed at the symposium?
The symposium covers various areas that capture the quality and breadth of clinical research. These include cancer research, mental health, new diagnostics, and new treatments.
We have also recently experienced a pandemic, and this has colored Ann-Marie’s time as Hospital Director. So some of the program items relate to the lessons we have learned following the pandemic, and this shows just how important the discussion about health and healthcare is within society, and the role that Sahlgrenska University Hospital plays.
In short, the honorary symposium illustrates the hospital’s activities in many different contexts.
Who do you think should attend?
The number of seats in Sahlgrenska’s Stora Aulan is of course limited, but all employees at the university hospital who are able to attend should take the opportunity to listen to these presentations.
The program covers clinical research, how research is put into practical use, and developments in healthcare for patients.
Which program items are you particularly looking forward to?
The concluding panel debate will be a fascinating session, focusing on the hospital’s future and its role in clinical research – locally, nationally, and internationally. I hope we will hear about current thinking, what we are good at, and what we can do better.
How do you think research has developed at Sahlgrenska University Hospital during Ann-Marie’s time as Hospital Director?
I would like to emphasize that the role of research has been reinforced and clarified as one of the obvious missions of a university hospital. This has been shown by the fact that two consecutive national medical training and research evaluations carried out by the Swedish Research Council have awarded us the highest rating for the quality of our clinical research. This demonstrates how Sahlgrenska University Hospital has succeeded in working systematically with research.
