AWARD. Mats Börjesson, professor of sports physiology, is this year’s recipient of the research award in sports science from SCIF (Swedish Central Association for the Promotion of Sports). The award is personal, and it is the most prestigious one within sports research. The prize is awarded for extensive and high-quality research in sports medicine, which has significant relevance to Swedish sports.
“It means a lot on a personal level. Nothing changes in everyday work, of course, but to be noticed by colleagues as a nominee and then to be chosen for such a fine award, inspires and pleases. There is actually 25 years of work behind awards like this, and not everyone gets them either. For me, the award represents a receipt that one should get involved and do research based on interest and conviction”, he says.
What do you think is the most fun about your research right now?
“That there is so much more to explore and educate about, especially within “my” areas, namely sports cardiology and physical activity for health. I actually have one of the world’s most enjoyable and interesting jobs, even if the workday rarely ends at 4 pm…
Safety in the sports arenas
In its justification for the award, SCIF notes that Mats Börjesson’s research has contributed to the development of heart screening and safety in the sports arenas, with significant implications for both the individual athlete and for organizers and the sports movement at large. He has, among other things, contributed to the development of the first European guidelines in sports cardiology in 2020. These guidelines guide, influence, and assist cardiac care throughout Europe. The guidelines serve as support for athletes with heart problems regarding the activities they can be recommended or need to be restricted in. The justification also highlights Mats Börjesson’s ability to communicate his research results, including by disseminating scientific messages through broad participation in the media. Mats Börjesson is also the team doctor for GAIS and the Swedish national women’s team.
Per Nilsson, chairman of SCIF’s research committee, believes that Professor Mats Börjesson, through outstanding research, has strongly and significantly promoted both Swedish and international sports, as well as the research areas in which he operates.
“Few Swedish researchers are as recognized nationally and internationally in their scientific field. Mats Börjesson possesses high competence in education, research, and collaboration with the surrounding society”, concludes Per.
