EDUCATION. Representatives from all medical education programs in Sweden recently came together in Gothenburg for the annual national meeting for medical programs. Learning and pedagogy in the new medical program were in focus, as well as Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) and simulation teaching.
The meeting took place from lunch to lunch on October 12-13. Many of the discussed points involved specific collaborative projects between institutions.
“That we all simultaneously launch a new program leading to medical licensure has allowed us to collaborate on issues we find suitable for this. Examples of this include a shared question bank for Multiple Choice Questions, collaboration in e-health education, and training in prescribing medication”, says Lars Börjesson, chairman of the medical program committee at Sahlgrenska Academy.
In addition to Lars Börjesson, central teachers, study counselors, coordinators, PU leaders, EPA coordinators, students, internationalization coordinators, and representatives from the Västra Götaland Region participated from Sahlgrenska Academy (you can see the names of all participants from Gothenburg at the bottom).
Agneta Holmäng, Dean at Sahlgrenska Academy, made welcoming remarks. The meeting was characterized by a series of short presentations and discussions. For instance, Magnus Hultin from Umeå University presented test-driven learning, Susanna Wallerstedt from the University of Gothenburg gave a presentation on the responsibility of obtaining prescription rights immediately after graduation, and Charlott Sellberg from the Department of of Applied IT, Division of Learning, Communication & IT at the University of Gothenburg spoke about simulation-based education.
Question bank and EPA
Additionally, progress was reported on the development of a national question bank and Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA), the system developed to monitor and examine students’ progression during their clinical training. The student union had invited Anna Nergårdh to speak on the important topic “Conditions for a sustainable professional life.”
Before the national meeting, pre-meetings were held within the following groups: program managers, professional development, thesis work, study counselors and administrators, as well as internationalization.
The meeting takes place once a year and rotates among the medical program’s seven universities: Gothenburg, Stockholm (KI), Linköping, Lund, Umeå, Uppsala, and Örebro.
