85 percent voted yes to Jenny Nyström as the new dean

19 October, 2023

DEAN ELECTION. Jenny Nyström received just over 85 percent of the votes in the dean election, where voter turnout reached almost 50 percent. At the same time, Sahlgrenska Academy’s drafting committee is also presenting its candidate for pro dean: Magnus Simrén, professor of medical gastroenterology at the Institute of Medicine.

In January 2023, the faculty-wide drafting committee was tasked by the faculty board to, in consultation with the Vice-Chancellor, initiate the preparation process to appoint dean and pro dean at Sahlgrenska Academy, for the term 2024-01-01—2029-12-31.

Half voted in the election

The dean’s election concluded at midnight, early this Thursday morning. Of all eligible voters (1280 individuals), 636 cast a vote in the election, resulting in a voter turnout of 49.69 percent. Of those who voted, 85.1 percent chose to support the drafting committee’s proposal that Jenny Nyström be appointed as dean. 16 individuals cast their vote for an independent proposal, where Jan Borén received 15 votes and Håkan Billig received 1 vote. The number of blank votes in the election was 79.

The election result now serves as guidance for Vice-Chancellor Malin Broberg, who will make the formal decision to appoint Jenny Nyström as the next dean of Sahlgrenska Academy.

Unanimous drafting committee

After the conclusion of the dean’s election, it is time for the drafting committee to propose a candidate for pro dean. A unanimous drafting committee proposes Professor Magnus Simrén from the Institute of Medicine as pro dean for Sahlgrenska Academy during the term 2024-01-01 – 2029-12-31.

Magnus Simrén is a combined professor/consultant and clinically active in the gastroenterology unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, leading a large research group at the Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine. He has been a regular member of the faculty board at Sahlgrenska Academy for six years. The drafting committee assesses that Magnus Simrén, with his extensive experience in clinical work and high-quality clinical research, contributes valuable expertise to the faculty leadership. The drafting committee believes that with Jenny Nyström as dean and Magnus Simrén as pro dean, Sahlgrenska Academy is well-equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the next term.

The pro dean election will also be conducted digitally, during the period November 1st –  10th, 2023. Akademiliv will soon publish a longer interview with Magnus Simrén ahead of the election.
