Katarina Bjelke has a postgraduate degree in medicine and extensive experience in the sector, but has had an administrative career – including as university director at KI and as ministerial councilor at the Ministry of Education. She is a trained dentist and received her doctorate in neuroanatomy at KI in 1997. For a couple of years after her doctorate, she worked on the same type of research as a postdoctoral fellow at the MRI center at Karolinska University Hospital. She abandoned her research career when she had the opportunity to be part of building up KI’s Grants Office.
