Akademiliv congratulates Bengt Hasséus on his professorship in oral medicine. Bengt Hasséus and co-workers study, using both clinical and laboratory methods, oral mucosal diseases that are a precursor to cancer. The research focuses on the importance of the immune system so that cancer does not develop. But methods for identifying biomarkers for cancer development are also done with genetic and molecular biological techniques. The aim of the research is to be able to identify mucosal changes with a high risk of cancer development at an early stage and distinguish these from conditions with a low risk. This would be of great patient benefit and could improve the treatment of these disease states. The research is conducted in collaboration with research groups at Sahlgrenska Academy, nationally and internationally. Bengt Hasséus teaches in the dentist and dental hygienist programs at the Institute of Odontology.
