UKRAINE. The Vice-Chancellor has decided that agreements between the University of Gothenburg and government institutions in Russia and Belarus shall be immediately deactivated and remain dormant for the time being.
On March 2, the Government called on higher education institutions and research funders to immediately cease contacts and collaborations with government institutions in Russia and Belarus and not to initiate new contacts or commitments.
After further discussion with the Vice-Chancellor’s management council (deans, chief librarian and student representative) and the vice-chancellors within the Swedish Association of Universities and University Colleges (SUHF), Vice-Chancellor Eva Wiberg made the following decision on Monday, March 7, 2022.
- Agreements between the University of Gothenburg and government institutions in Russia and / or Belarus must be deactivated and remain dormant for the time being. This means that contacts and activities within the framework of agreements reached in the decision shall cease for the time being.
- No new contacts or commitments shall be initiated at the institutional level between the university and state institutions in Russia or Belarus.
- Researchers / teachers at the university who have individual contacts with Russian or Belarusian researchers / teachers must in each individual case ensure that the collaboration is appropriate and pay special attention to the security policy aspects. Consultation with the immediate manager and relevant research funder is encouraged.
- The contact person responsible for each agreement made by this decision must ensure that the decision is implemented and documented. If no contact person can be identified, the relevant head of department / equivalent is responsible.
The University of Gothenburg stands for democracy, freedom of expression and human rights. The university has therefore participated in the higher education sector’s condemnation of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine through statements at both EU and national level.
