Introducing the University Hospital’s 26 new senior colleagues

18 December, 2021

TITLES. Physician, psychologist, speech therapist, or nurse–the primary profession does not matter when Sahlgrenska University Hospital becomes the only hospital in Sweden to give academically well-qualified colleagues new titles.

Since 2011, doctors have been designated University Hospital chief physicians. In 2017, this concept was extended to also apply to other colleagues with academic educations under the collective name University Hospital senior staff. On Tuesday, six nurses, 15 physicians, a psychologist, a speech therapist, a biologist, a microbiologist, and a physicist gathered in the dining room at Sahlgrenska University Hospital to receive their new titles along with diplomas and flowers. So 26 colleagues can now add “University Hospital senior…” to their title.

Ann-Marie Wennberg

“Knowledge and curiosity are the engine that drives healthcare forward,” says Sahlgrenska University Hospital Director and Professor Ann-Marie Wennberg. “By doing so, our patients gain access to the best possible care–but this works both ways: If we were to stop engaging in research, education, and development, it would affect our patients. That is why, at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, we give special priority and encouragement to employees who excel in academia and clinical work. We should be proud of our University Hospital professions.”

All University Hospital senior professions require, among other things, clinical service of at least 30 percent, at least 10 years of service in the profession, associate professorship, and ongoing research with current projects and publications. A nomination committee prepares the proposals received and submits a joint proposal to the hospital director, who makes decisions and informs the hospital’s management team.

“Sahlgrenska University Hospital’s vision is ‘Healthcare, research, development, and education of the highest quality.’ I consider it particularly important to take advantage of the expertise that colleagues, regardless of their primary profession, have acquired through their academic work,” says Wennberg.
