RANKING. In this year’s edition of the Shanghai ranking, the University of Gothenburg climbs three spots to 138th in the world. The University retains its leading position in Sweden in human biological sciences (ranked 22nd internationally) and in dentistry (26th internationally).
The Shanghai Ranking, or its official name the Academic Ranking of World Universities, published its 2021 rankings on August 15. As a whole, the University of Gothenburg ranks fourth in Sweden. The list for Sweden is topped by Karolinska Institutet, followed by Stockholm University and Uppsala University.
The University of Gothenburg is included in 29 of the 54 subject lists. Among Swedish higher education institutions, the University holds the highest ranking on five of these lists: Dentistry & Oral Science (26), Human Biological Sciences (22), Political Sciences (27), Public Administration (29), and Law (101–150). The University is also in the top 100 in the following subjects: Biological Sciences (31), Clinical Medicine (51–75), Nursing (51–75), Oceanography (51–75), Atmospheric Science (76–100), and Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences (76–100).

Among international universities, the United States dominates, with Harvard University ranked first and followed by Stanford University. The University of Cambridge in the UK is ranked third best university in the world.
