CONDITIONS OF RESEARCH. The new Core Facilities Council at Sahlgrenska Academy has now convened for a first meeting of its term of office that extends from May 2021 to April 2024. The council’s mission is to monitor the focus, development and quality issues in the research support provided at Core Facilities.
The council consists of representatives from all institutions within Sahlgrenska Academy and one representative each from the Faculty of Science, Chalmers University of Technology, Region Västra Götaland and the students’ union.

“The council is an important link between the research infrastructure and users, so the needs of users are the main focus of discussions,” says Carina Mallard, head of Core Facilities and chair of the council.
Carina emphasizes that the council deals with issues that concern the entire University and the region.
“That underscores the importance of having competent members who can contribute with a broad perspective spanning the entire faculty as well as external participants.”
Collaboration an important issue
Collaboration nationally and within Gothenburg will be an important issue for the council because Core Facilities is open to researchers at the University of Gothenburg and regionally, nationally and internationally.
“We are also part of several national infrastructures and have recently been appointed to coordinate a new SciLifeLab node at the University,” says Mallard.
Core Facilities also deals with provision of premises, which will be another important issue for the council.
An advisory body
Aside from deciding on awarding the Bollan scholarship, the council is an advisory body, not a decision-making body. The Faculty Board, which is also the infrastructure’s steering group, makes major decisions about Core Facilities’ operations. Council meetings take place four times a year, or more often if needed.

Facts – Appointment of members and deputies to the council
- According to Sahlgrenska Academy’s rules of procedure (section 6.5.2), the Council for Core Facilities is to consist of 10 members. The majority of the members and substitutes are to have academic backgrounds.
- Six members are to be appointed by the dean, one of whom is head of Core Facilities, and five members are to be appointed by the dean after consultation with the faculty-wide nominating committee.
- The remaining four members are appointed by the Faculty of Science, Chalmers University of Technology, Region Västra Götaland and the students’ union, with one representative for each.
- Except for the head of Core Facilities, a deputy is appointed for each of the members. The deputies are appointed in the same way as regular members.
