The pandemic has affected all research, and also made it harder for doctoral students to finnish all the planned work before the dissertation. An opportunity to extend the doctoral period has been opened by the Vice-Chancellor and the student union at the University of Gothenburg, but there is no central funding for such extensions. The Sahlgrenska Academy’s faculty board has now decided that it is the institutes that both decides and finances any extension of doctoral student projects, even for those who are part-financed by joint faculty funds. These matters are handled by the head of institute. The universities is about to receive a temporary increase of government grants, where the Vice-Chancellor will decide on distribution to faculties, after which the faculty will decide on the distribution to the institutes.
