The Government’s research policy bill goes by the name “Research, freedom, the future – knowledge and innovation for Sweden”. The bill contains investments of a total of 13.6 billion during the period 2021–2024. The government is investing in five overall societal challenges: climate and environment, health and welfare (including pandemics), digitization (including the effects of the pandemic), skills supply and working life, and a democratic and strong society. The bill also increases the basic appropriations for the higher education institutions and the appropriations for the research infrastructures. For the period 2021-2024, the appropriations for research and development will be increased by a total of SEK 3.75 billion, which can be compared with the 2016 research bill, when the increase was SEK 2.8 billion.
