RESEARCH SEMINAR. In September, Sahlgrenska Academy’s new series of research seminars will start – Sahlgrenska Academy Science Seminars (SASS). The seminars will initially be held over Zoom. When the pandemic has passed, SASS will be held on site in the Arvid Carlsson lecture hall every Thursday at 3 p.m.
SASS is run by the Council for Research Questions (FOR) with the support of Professor Ruth Palmer. She was also one of the initiators of the Medical Hill Seminars, which are now being replaced by this new faculty-wide forum. Starting September 10, interesting research seminars will be held in the Arvid Carlsson lecture hall every Thursday at 3 p.m.
So far, four speakers have been booked this autumn for Sahlgrenska Academy Science Seminars. Since there will be lectures every week, additional suggestions for speakers are welcomed.
“As a researcher, you can propose yourself or a research colleague at the University of Gothenburg or Chalmers. You can also suggest a researcher from another university or university college in Sweden or abroad, or a speaker from a company or research institute,” says Joanna Larsson, collaboration coordinator at the Unit for Research Support at the Faculty Office and administrative support for SASS.
Premiere September 10
During the autumn, most seminars will be held online using Zoom. The first speaker will be Hiroki Shibuya, assistant professor at CMB at the Faculty of Science, whose group works with how the pairing and recombination of homologous chromosomes are regulated at the molecular level, with the mouse as the model system. The group uses a combination of genetic, molecular, cytological, and biochemical methods. Hiroki Shibuya’s seminar will be streamed live over Zoom on Thursday, September 10 at 3:00 p.m.
Limited number of attendees
During the autumn, SASS will normally be held over Zoom. An exception will be on September 17, when Visiting Professor Laurent Groc will give the seminar “Nanoscale dynamics of the synaptic material: lessons for brain physiology and pathology”. A limited number of attendees will be allowed to sit in on this seminar in the Arvid Carlsson lecture hall, while others can follow along on Zoom.
Plans for a pub
After the pandemic has past, the faculty management hopes that SASS will become an important hub for research discussions at Sahlgrenska Academy and at Medicinareberget. Once the once-a-week in-person seminars begin again, it is hope that a pub can be organized following the talks, where researchers can relax, discuss the seminar, and socialize.
One suggestion is for the pub to be held in the Birgit Thilander assembly room, upstairs from the Arvid Carlsson lecture hall.
“Many have been asking for a more social setting for both staff and students. The students’ union is open to the idea of running the pub and has begun examining the possibility of obtaining a license to serve alcohol,” explains Joanna Larsson.
- The seminars will be held in English on Thursdays from 3:00–4:00 PM in the Arvid Carlsson lecture hall in Academicum, starting in September.
