ALF FUNDING. Because of the spread of the novel coronavirus, the major application period for ALF funding will be delayed one year. This year’s application period for ALF project funding and ALF project funding for younger researchers was planned to open on April 17 but will instead open in spring 2021.
The decision was made in consultation with Medi-sam Forskning, based on the current situation with COVID-19, and was announced through Caterina Finizia, director of research, education, development and innovation at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and Henrik Hagberg, pro-dean at Sahlgrenska Academy.
“A large percentage of our clinical researchers are currently fully occupied handling the effects of the pandemic in different way. COVID-19 is impacting the work situation not just for infectious disease specialists, intensive care doctors and virologists but also a long list of other specialists. Many clinical researchers are now so busy that they have no chance of writing good applications, and it would be unfair to go through with this year’s major application round of ALF funding as planned,” says Henrik Hagberg.
Extended project funding
The decision means that the application round is delayed until the same period next year instead. Everyone who has ALF project funding or a combination position with ALF financing for 2018–2020 will automatically receive an extension, and in 2021 they will receive nearly as much funding as in previous years.
“We have decided that the amount for 2021 will be 95 percent of the amount received in the previous application round. We need to lower the amount somewhat to be able to afford allowing new docents and recently immigrated clinical researchers also to apply for project funding, to fund ALF positions, and to be able to complete already begun strategic initiatives for 2021,” says Hagberg.
