FUNDING. Right now, the Corona virus is spreading around the world. Global infections will continue, also in the future. In order to equip the world better for the next outbreak of viruses, the Swedish Research Council is making a special investment in virus research.
Swedish research on viral infections is performing well internationally, including research on both cellular and molecular mechanisms and on how infections arise and develops, as well as identifying targets for new drugs. But there are also knowledge gaps. For example, there is limited research on pandemic threat viruses, and viruses that cause common infections. There is also no working medicine and vaccine for most viral diseases.
The Swedish Research Council is now mapping virus research conducted in Sweden. VR will invite researchers and stakeholders to a workshop in order to jointly identify knowledge gaps and agree on what effort will be most useful for strengthening Swedish research and knowledge in the area.

“The Swedish Research Council plans to announce funding for research on viral infections that are not currently treatable, in order to contribute to the long-term development of the research area in Sweden. and health at the Swedish Research Council. The result of the workshop will help us focus the announcement, “says Jan-Ingvar Jönsson, who is Secretary General for medicine and health at the Swedish Research Council.
