Christmas greetings from Agneta Holmäng and Henrik Hagberg

17 December, 2019

First, let us thank you all for your great efforts during the year! It is you, committed and knowledgeable teachers and researchers, and you, our knowledgeable administrative and technical staff, who lift Sahlgrenska Academy to greater hights! We know that it in many ways has been a challenging year, both in research and education, and we hope that you now all take the opportunity to recover during the Christmas holidays!

We are entering the new year with confidence. We have many researchers who have received prestigious research grants that make it possible for them to establish or strengthen their research groups at Sahlgrenska Academy. In recent years, our faculty has made several strategic investments for young promising researchers, which has been a success factor for us.

There is a lot going on for our education as well. Last fall, we started the country’s only specialist nurse education in neurosurgery. The work of getting the new, longer and credentialed medical program in place has involved many of our teachers during the year. In the spring, th intense work will continue and we will then have to apply for a degree-awarding power from the Swedish Higher Education Authority.

We are also deepening our collaboration with Chalmers in research and education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Our teachers will teach on the new civil engineering program in medical technology. Through a new joint research school, doctoral students will be able to obtain dual doctoral degrees in many areas, such as AI in the health field.

Another exciting development is about our campuses and how they can provide the best possible conditions for our business. In the next few years, we are investing in venue development and are involved in several construction projects. The process aims to create space for future research and teaching. It is a positive and necessary development, but at the same time it poses many challenges, especially for staff who is disturbed by vibration and noise.

We believe in learning and being inspired by others. Many of the major future issues for research and education can only be solved through collaboration. Together with our good partner Sahlgrenska University Hospital, we recently hosted InFuturum, which annually gathers key people from all of Sweden’s medical faculties and university hospitals. This meeting provided an opportunity to exchange experiences and learn from others. Now we are getting ready for the next big meeting. In April, we have invited colleagues from other medical faculties to a national faculty meeting, where employees in finance, HR, postgraduate education and other areas to discuss various common issues here in Gothenburg.

With these words we wish you a really Merry Christmas and a good start to the new year!
