University of Gothenburg has started work on a new vision

9 May, 2019

GOVERNING DOCUMENTS. The University of Gothenburg’s Vision 2020 expires at the end of next year. In its final meeting of the previous year, the University Board decided that a new vision is to be drawn up. Work on this has started and you are welcome to participate.

The University of Gothenburg’s vision is embodied in an establishment-wide steering document showing where we want to go and the most important issues that we have to face. Its purpose is to stimulate development and new ideas. Linked to the vision, there are strategies, objectives and a planning and monitoring process that shows how the university is to work towards its vision. Our present vision runs out at the end of 2020. Thus, a new one has to be developed.

Three questions lead the work

Three questions lead our vision work.
What is our purpose? Where are we going? How are we to get there?

The first step is answering what is our purpose? To do this, we will be formulating the university’s core values and guiding principles. Said values and principles are to apply until further notice and will pervade the university’s vision, strategies, management and governance.

Overall objectives, directions and the university’s role in society are then to be established in three visionary stances. Along with the core values and guiding principles, they form the vision.

To determine direction in various areas shared strategies and initiatives are also to be developed. These are to run for in short term and are to be adaptable to changes in the world at large. Our stances and directions in the various areas show where we are going.

Working from these components, the faculties are then to draw up education and research strategies. These provide the answer to how are we to get there?

Welcome to participate

Development of the new vision is being led by our Deputy Vice-Chancellors and the Acting University Director and the current meeting forums in our organisation will be used for discussions as much as possible.

Throughout the year, the new vision and the core values will be discussed in various forums. You are welcome to influence and participate in the open vision seminars arranged for employees in early June. Similar seminars are arranged for students this fall.
