SECURITY. The entire university, including Sahlgrenska Academy, is currently experiencing many thefts. Sahlgrenska Academy Security Coordinator Anders Ringeby offers some concrete tips on how you can keep your computer and those of others from being stolen.
Thefts at the university usually increase during the period from March to October, but right now we are seeing unusual numbers. Portable computers, especially Macs, are highly sought after. If your office is on a lower floor, where it is easy to smash a window to get in, you need to be extra vigilant.
“If you see anything that seems suspicious, I think you should rely on your gut feelings and contact us immediately at the campus security group,” says Anders Ringeby, who is security coordinator at Sahlgrenska Academy.
You can reach the security team at 031-786 3560 or 031-786 3680. After business hours, you can reach the security guard at 031 786 1755.
Some concrete advice:
- If you have a portable computer, put it away. It may be sufficient to put it in a cabinet so it is not in the thief’s field of view.
- Do not let in unknown persons. Ask who the person is looking for and accompany the visitor to the person who is to receive the visit. Escort the visitor out of the building again if that person is not present.
- If your office is visible from outside, it’s a good idea to close the curtains.
- Immediately report doors that are not closing properly. Doors that don’t shut properly make it easy for thieves.
