AWARD. This year’s recipient of Pedalen, Henrik Fagman, likes using his sense of humor to reach his audience. He has now received the award Pedalen, which is the student’s way of showing appreciation for dedicated teachers at Sahlgrenska Academy.

Henrik is very pleased about the award:
“It makes it even more inspiring to continue working with teaching and learning. I’m particularly happy because the price comes from the students themselves.”

As a senior lecturer in pathology, Henrik mainly teaches courses in clinical anatomy and pathology for medical students and also in courses within the BMA program. For him, the meeting and interaction between students and teacher is the essence of each lecture, which provides unique learning conditions:
“It requires mutual commitment and I hope I express it as I teach. Humor is an important way for me to contact the auditorium. I want to be open and honest with the fact that I do not have answered all the questions and that we often have to feel humble about it in health care,” says Henrik Fagman.

See the patient

Although he teaches anatomy and a laboratory medical subject as pathology, Henrik tries to emphasize that it is not structures or test responses that are the goal of the activities.

“Good knowledge and high-quality diagnostics are absolutely necessary conditions that patients are entitled to expect, but we must never forget that behind anatomical and investigation findings, there is a person whom we will try to help in the best way. I hope that, with my teacher’s style, I convey something of that.”

What do you think is the most rewarding part of being a teacher for Sahlgrenska Academy students?
“The students give so much joy through their curiosity, energy, willingness to learn and their good mood! Often the students reflect on aspects I have never considered and I learn a lot myself every time I meet them. Getting involved with and contributing some little pieces of the puzzle to the student’s overall picture of human health and illness feels great and meaningful. I also have the privilege of working with lovely colleagues in the courses I teach. Often, there are many that make great efforts in the quiet, for example as course leaders and course administrators, to create the conditions for good education.”

Exceptional rhetorics

Pedalen is the Sahlgrenska Academy Student Union SAKS’ Educational Prize, awarded every year since 1984. The prize is awarded to teachers who conveyed knowledge and commitment to the students in a meritorious way. According to the motivation, Henrik Fagman receives the prize “for his excellent teaching technique, his lectures, which he makes extremely interesting and instructive for everyone present, through his dedication and interest.” The motivation also highlights Henrik’s ability to capture the entire audience with exceptional rhetoric, and that the atmosphere in his hall is relaxed, providing an optimal study and learning environment.

Pedalen is usually handed out at Villa Medici, SAKS in the spring, in conjunction with the traditional Harring event at Valborgsmässoafton. Since Henrik was away on a trip last spring, the award of the prize had to wait:

“It’s an extra fun start at the autumn term to get the prize now!
